The West Virginia DNR changed the rules as far as archery hunting, starting this fall, crossbows will be legal. Years ago I hunted with a compond bow, back in the early 80's.
Archery stuff has changed so much over the years, everything is new to me. But I'm sure some of you guys have crossbows, what all kind of equipment would a guy need to get started. Any suggestions on brands? Broadheads? Scopes?
And what kind of range can you get? Just thinking about it now, I'd be happy with 40 yards. I mean a nice group, say 5" circle at 40 yards. Is that too much to ask for?

A guy I know has a mission and loves it. He told me that he would not hesitate to shoot a deer with it at 50 yards. He shoots rage broadheads and says you have to be careful when shooting it that you don't ruin several bolts by shooting them into each other. Kind of pricey though.

Hmmm, not much comment. I talked to the guy that owns the local bow shop, he told me that there is a good bit of preventive maintence. Don't know. But he sells Matthews and some other high-dollar cross bow. The way he talked, you needed to do a few things, between every 15 shots or so. Said you might be able to get a year and a half use from the string and cables. Darned string is about $40.
But if I'd get set up with his stuff, anywhere from $750 to $2000. He also said 50 yards is do-able. There again, poking something with an arrow, not much forgiveness for bad placement. I heard rumors about when Ohio made crossbows legal. Guess we'll see what happens.
