BEIJING (AP) - Chinese authorities killed almost 5,000 dogs in one city after blaming five human deaths on rabies, the official Xinhua News Agency reported Sunday.
The city of Baoshan in southwestern Yunnan province killed 4,900 dogs and vaccinated another 100,000 in its anti-rabies campaign, Xinhua said. The city issued an urgent order calling for authorities to tightly regulate dogs and kill stray ones.
Chinese governments often order such widespread dog culls or ban dog ownership to control the spread of rabies. That has sparked outcry from some dog owners and animal rights activists who call for sterilizing and vaccinating dogs rather than killing them.
In 2009, authorities in the northern city of Hanzhong reportedly killed about 37,000 dogs after a rabies outbreak, including clubbing some of the animals to death.

No problem so long as they don't let any of the meat go to waste.

In China if PETA held protests no doubt they'd either go to prison for life or be shot. If 5 humans died of rabies in one city here, there'd be a lot of dead dogs too.

I don't think so Pam we would be trying to treat them not kill them due to a change in our socity and what people think of mass culling for any purpose when it comes to animals.

Treating rabid dogs? I doubt that very much. If you want to see lots and lots of rabid dogs travel in the slums of Mexico City. They are all over the place. That is another thing we could do to make dog owners more responsible. They could be fined for owning a dog that carries rabies as there is a way to prevent the disease in a canine.

"..we would be trying to treat them not kill them "
Even if there was a cure for rabies in an animal, there isn't for people and I think parents would value their kids more than their own or any stray dogs if push came to shove. At least I HOPE they would.

"Most" states, counties and/or municipalities have rabies vaccination laws here too. Some have "medical exceptions" for the dog if it's sick, allergic to the vaccine, or is being treated for something that it would interfere with. I think there may be a lot of unvaccinated dogs around, it's darn expensive to go to the vet these days. Just one of the reasons we don't have a dog anymore.
When the Beav trapped down south he was told if he caught a dog or even saw one that didn't have a collar just to shoot it. They have packs of dogs running wild all over, it's a real problem. People can't take care of them so just let them go. I don't know that he ever did shoot one, but he did get chased to his truck by a pack of 4 nasty snapping dogs that came running at him across a field. They even jumped up on the truck door to get to him. He didn't know he could still run that fast. lol
