Anybody buy 'refurbished computers', ie; those that were returns, or overstock, cancelled orders, etc. that were gone through by the manufacturer (Dell, HP, etc) ? My computer guru buddy told me to buy one as opposed to new for the price savings since I need to put a new system together that can handle my new GIS program and related programs and the new superfast internet I'm hooking up at home. Hate spending money on this stuff that should rightfully go towards another firearm, optics, etc.

Depends on where you find them and if the party really knows what they're doing. Probably fine as long as they have a warranty on them. On the other hand, new computers aren't that expensive anymore since they're rapidly becoming obsolete.

My son is a bit of a computer wiz, he only buys refurbs from the manufacturer, he has built and upgraded many times over the years and never a problem. The Manufacturers do have a warrantee on them.

Yeah, that's what the ones I'm looking at are, refurb by the manufacturer with a warranty from them. Some very good deals and my buddy will add on whatever else I need. And not add all the programs I have no use for.

even better- I have a tech whiz buddy and he buys or is given old computers, and he "hot rods" them up and sells at nominal fees- chances are there is a similar guy by you

Problem is that my ArcView GIS programs and the associated programs require Windows and other Microsoft systems to operate and are not certified or supported on Mac.
I don't do I phones, have never sent a text in my life, and have a dislike of cellphones in general since the areas where I figure I would really need one don't get cell reception, like offshore or deep in the national forests.

Too bad. I bought a few dell computers though the years they have went downhill fast and would never buy another again their support and service sucks bad. That was the last straw to make the switch to Apple for me.
