China is rapidly becoming the USAs largest dairy export market. Last year the USA exported 16% of the total 202 billion lbs. of milk equivalent produced here. Ten years ago we exported about 3-4% of 170 billion lbs. That is one reason milk prices are record highs. China also imports a lot of pork so that reflects in the prices as well as soybeans. With such a beef shortage that carries over to pork and poultry too as they can raise prices also. It will take some time to get the beef numbers back up, say 4 years plus, pork can turn around in 2 or so and poultry can do so in 6 months. With high beef and pork prices we have breeding herds that hold back more heifers and gilts to raise more beef and pork so that takes more off the market and increases the shortages temporarily. WI produces about 29 billion lbs. of milk equivalent behind California's 45 billion. Our dairy exports now exceed our 2nd largest states total production. We won't be seeing low cost food for a while if the rest of the world is willing to pay the prices they to get high quality protein in their diets.

Pretty much the same as with oil prices isn't it?

Pretty much any and all commodities. Energy independence will not be achieved cheaply but it may be very necessary as the world becomes more populated and other nations gain more wealth. We may need to get serious about the sources that we poo-poo today. There will be many failures and bankruptcies in the search for other sources of energy, fiber, food etc. but then the cost of being an ostrich may be considerably higher.

Goddamn Chinese eating our food and burning our gas. We should let Sarah Palin drill the North slope and show the SOB's!!
On a serious note, food has gone up tremendously in just the past year or so. I've noticed that you can't get a hamburger for less than about 5 bucks anymore and they are 60% of the size they were. That means about double the price.
