Anyone else notice pork prices in the last few weeks?

ST. LOUIS - The price of meat may have you opting to put vegetables on the grill this summer. Both beef and pork prices are on the rise, but for two different reasons.

Pork farmers across the country are dealing with a virus called porcine epidmic diarrhea that's killing millions of baby pigs, and it's just starting to make its way into Missouri and Illinois.

The virus hasn't hit the Maschhoff Family Farm in Carlyle, Ill. yet, but it has infected some of the family's sites in different parts of the country. To try and prevent it from hitting the Illinois location, owners are restricting access to the animals.

Any workers or vehicles that do get near the pigs have to go through a disinfecting process. Farmers say those who have been hit by the virus are expected to take a $200,000 to $250,000 hit, which means consumers will notice that loss at the grocery store.

"There's a huge ripple effect because obviously we're going to decrease production on our farms and have a hole in our production numbers. There's going to be less supply down the road," said Julie Maschhoff.

Beef prices are also on the rise, as cattle farmer work to make up from the drought. Butchers say those prices could increase by 10 percent or more heading into the summer.

Dang maybe we will all need food stamps before too long! I went to Sam's Club to buy a few more pork butts for smoking at my sons graduation parties I have 3 in the freezer but they went from a 1.79 per lb to 2.68 lb in a month. 2 pack pork butts now cost close to 40.00 instead of 31 or so.

I'll just go shoot another feral hog or three, to go along with all the fish and shellfish in my freezer and canned on my shelves.

They are hoping to add more weight on the packers to help offset until numbers come back. I will ride it out and see what happens. bacon has been high for awhile and the price has went up and down for awhile I will just catch on a down cycle. Bought pork loins for 1.79 on sale awhile back and cut chops and roast and freeze them cheap source of protein at that price. Chicken still a good buy at 1.04 per lb.

Wild hog is good for sure. But most people won't go out and do the work LOL. hence the reason 110 million hogs slaughtered each year in the US.

Sure is I haven't fed my kids a good steak in a long while too costly for sure. 9-12 a lb for a ribeye is crazy priced. 4 a lb for brisket is as bad. I smoke far more porK and poultry than brisket, I shy away from a chunk of brisket that cost 35-40 bucks.

If you ask me, beef smells like nuts, that is because they stand in those feedlots and inhale nuts for weeks while they get fed out.

we got a good local butcher, where everything is done here from local beef, and it s pretty good beef- but as TC says, the price kills ya.

I find my tases are more white meat lately-

lori broasts whole chicken and I absolutely love it- plus you get chix salad sandwiches the next day

I was born and raised on an Illinois livestock farm, but I've reached the point where It won't bother me if I never have another piece of red meat.

Love lamb one of my favorites but until I can get back north and purchase a couple on the hoof I can't afford to feed my family that anymore either. When I lived in SD I had great access to Awesome lamb at a great price always had 35-70 lbs in the freezer not with what it would cost me locally even from a farm. Cheapest I have found is 7.29 per lb butchered. that is far higher than I paid in SD.

Hmmmmm, i bet the yote men could make more money than their paycheck by just taking lambs in payment!!! Tasty! I hate mutton though!!

Tman had nothing to do with subsidizing they could sell at market for more than they charged me. It was more a friendship thing. Also our butcher charged a nominal fee as the grocery store did our cutting and packaging and made some money but offered more as a convince for those that shopped there. 37.50 to have an entire lamb cut, packaged and even ground burger for that cost.

Lamb burger is great for meatballs and tacos.

Tman never ate lamb? You have to but some lamb chops and grill them on low and melted butter and garlic and then salt and pepper right off the grill. You want lamb medium rare and you will be eating some fine red meat! A leg of lamb roast with some rosemary and garlic inside the meat is awsome. Chislic is great as well. take some lamb meat and slice it 1/2- 3/4" thick and deep fry on a skewer for 2 mins and sprinkle with salt and pepper eat it that way or your favorite dipping sauce.

lamb is awsome stuff for sure. Lamb ribs are the most tender out there.

They are talking of placing some restrictions on trapping here in that we may need to keep a log of all the farms with livestock that you go on... the pork virous made its way into Saskatchewan.... a truck was washed and cab clean but the BOOTS were positive'
How many trappers scrub and disinfect between jobs
this pig virous is not doing what it was supost to in cold weather...it is spreading faster than expected

I love lamb, but it is hard to find at a reasonable price. Used to be, one could pick up a bum lamb for cheap and raise it. They want $70+ for one now. I've a friend who raises hogs that I occasionally buy from and butcher myself. He cut back his operation the past couple of years, but has had a long standing policy for years. No one goes into his pig barns. Pigs are apparently susceptible to any number of viruses we carry.
