I don't think they get any better than the M1 Garand, steeped in history and a lot of fun to shoot. And you might as well have a Mauser 98 as well,

I can hear the 'TING' every time I see one. Especially when I play my favorite game of all time. Battlefield: Bad Company 2

I love that sound, every time I shoot my Garand I just wait for it. I used to shoot the DCM high power matches where you paid like $2 for a 60 round bandoleer of 30-06 in Garand clips. It was amazing how accurately you could shoot those old service rifles at 600 yds. Damn good practice too. I shoot the Mausers quite a bit too, mine are Czech made VZ-24's that looked to be unissued when I bought them, crisp bores, no sign of buffing on the bolts. 8mm Mauser, which I handload or occasionally find cheap in stripper clips. Rifles that were made to operate no matter what. Every time I see a Garand I wonder about its history, WW2, Korea, and beyond.

That was my rifle while I was in the Marine Corps. It had a more dependable action than today's semi-auto .223's, was plenty accurate, and was easy to field strip.
