MTV has a new show coming out called “Buckwild,” and fans are anxious to check this one out. Described as “Jersey Shore” meets “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” the show features a group of twenty-somethings that have grown up together in rural West Virginia. The previews indicate this will be a wild show that will get people talking, and it seems it already has. The Washington Post shared on Dec. 7 that Sen. Joe Manchin III is quite critical of the show given what he's seen so far and he wants MTV to pull the plug.
The Washington Post shares that the West Virginia senator has sent a letter to the president of MTV asking that he “put a stop to the travesty called 'Buckwild.'” The show features nine young adults from the town of Sissonville, W. Va., and some have described the show as “The 'Jersey Shore' of Appalachia.'” While Manchin hasn't seen the show itself, only the previews, he says he's repulsed by what he's seen. He writes, “I cannot imagine that anyone who loves this country would feel proud profiting off of 'Buckwild.”
Manchin goes on to write that he thinks it is shameful that MTV is “preying” on the young people of the state engaging in “shameful behavior” rather than “showcasing the beauty of our people and our state.” He also thinks the show takes advantage of existing, inaccurate stereotypes about the people of West Virginia. Many remember that there were similar complaints when “Jersey Shore” first hit the screens as well.
What do you think about the drama? MTV hasn't issued a comment in response to the letter, and it's unlikely they're going to feel terribly worried about it. Do you have any interest in tuning in to “Buckwild” when it premieres Jan. 3?
