Sitting in a field next to a levee in the pre-dawn darkness, sipping a cup of tea, the dog sitting next to me looking up and listening to the green-winged teal whistling overhead. The Beretta leaning against my pack. Duck season opened today in my zone, lots of ducks rafted up all over the bay, but not much standing water in the fields. Should be plenty of water in those fields after the storms coming in this week though. Had to do a little hunt this morning, got a few teal, made the dog happy, made me happy, and it's gonna be seared duck breasts with an apricot port wine glaze tonight. Goose season doesn't open here for another 10 days, but the Aleutian invasion has just begun and I'll be shooting them till mid March.

They're cackling geese, as in Aleutian cackling goose, their just little fellas, maybe a mallard and a half in size. They're very good eating and fun to hunt. And they're quite vocal, when big flocks are coming in you can't hear yourself think it gets so loud. These are all Aleutians, in the late season, when they're all congregated here this is a common sight, with flights 5 or 6 times that size coming at you.
