For coyotes I have always used mouth calls . I picked up a fox pro for coon and been playing around with it for coyotes. What gets me is the constant sounds . When I used a mouth call I would hit it for 30 -45 sec then shut up for awhile then again in 5 min. I never saw a wild rabbit or bird scream non-stop like they show in the newer coyote calling videos. Am I missing something.

Yes. Quit trying to apply logic. Accept good advice. Continuous sound actually works better, on average. As a matter of fact, I have seldom heard the sounds, in nature that we use all the time to attract predators. The rabbit sounds I have heard is a pitiful low wail, never the loud excited sound in all the recordings. Which, by the way, are usually made by terrifying, or torturing the animal in a net. But, why fight it? It works. Save the pitiful low wail for coaxing the hung up animal.

coyotes are driven to basic instincts and as LB states don't over think it. A distress cry to a coyote either 3 mins or 20 means food and triggers their brain to such. As stated no reasoning to decifer, I used a great distress that coyotes in my areas never heard before in their life but worked extremely well. They didn't know that critter was not found in the area, sound, pitch and caidance was different than the norm and triggered them to invesitgate.
No different than in the summer a pup in distress triggers parental instincts.
