I'm toying with the idea of buying a .17.
This gun would be like my others - destined for hard living and lots of neglect.
If you had to pick between a Savage model 93r17 Fv or a Marlin model 917V Rbolt action.
Or the Savage 93r17 FVSS?
What kind of hole does a .17 make if it exists? What would it do to a red fox?
The ammo seems pricey compared to the old .22LR.
Thanks.

Sounds like you're thinking about the rimfires, .17 HMR or .17 Mach2 as opposed to the centerfires like the .17 Rem. or the .17 Fireball.
I used a .17 Rem. for cats for a long time and the reason was to minimize pelt damage.
The .17 HMR will kill gray fox and generally not exit, but I'd not use it on cats or coyotes. Even on the grays I'd keep the shots within 100 yards.
Neither. I'd buy a CZ 452 which is what I did.
Or buy the new CZ 455, which you can switch barrels on, from .17 HMR, to .22 LR, .22 LR or .17 Mach 2.
They're around $400 US on Gunbroker.com, don't know the price in Canada.

Musher...In my opinion, you really need a semi auto when shooting the 17 hmr. That only leaves one choice which is the Volquartsen. A little pricey, but well worth the money.
Exits on red fox is about the size of a 50 cent piece when shot broadside. You get fewer exits on greys and the exit size is slightly smaller.

Randy, I am much disappointed we didn't get together down in Texas this year! Pencil me in on your dance card for next year, Amigo.
PS, I think he gives good advice, that "stuff" is pricey, but then again, he's hardcore. LB
PS, I just got back. Lubbock. I'll call you and tell you about it. But, not before next week. I'm leaving for Elko in a couple days.

A word of advice on Elko, LB, Don't try to call them out of the brush to you, they won't do it. You have to get in the brush with them. I've never seen anything quite like it.

It's probably because of the $5 predator suppression fee attached to every game license? They have to spend the money, necessary or not.
Nah, I haven't been up there lately, but that's just a guess? Never used to be that way. Anyway, our biggest concern is mud, right now. It's not getting cold enough at night and days are up in the forties.
I have a plan though, gonna show Scott a little night hunting. But thanks for the advice, I'll take a 835 with me and wade into the bushes. LB
