accordingto nafa, 2 skunks will buy a gallon of gas or milk. but it takes 27-33 january skunks to get 1 gallon of rendered fat. I`m scraping about 85 skunks now and figuring it out. fall skunks are worth a lot more fat wise, but about 1/3 the essence. the reason is a jan catch is 90% males skunks, bigger stink sacs. but skinny from chasing it all over. must be what`s wrong with me. lol, raise a lot of stink, always chasing it, and not worth much for rendering out.

If they werent so sensitive to sedation milking them and keeping them would be the way to go. They will eat about anything from the ones I have held over the years.

reminds me of the wyoming rancher that saw a dozen or so skunks in the truck, dead of summer. he says what you going to do with them? I says suck the butt juice out, $10 an ounce. he wrinkles up his face terrible. I says no, WITH A SYRINGE. he say, oh, ok.

Heck Bob, I didn't think you would have to sedate them at all, just sweet talk them out of the juice. LOL Mike

I used chloroform back in those days for sedation purposes but it could get tricky with dosages and duration of administration. Some fatalaties occurred and I soon realized it wasnt a bullet proof method. I had my share of stinky moments and successful times when you felt you had the answers. It wasnt an easy or efficient process so I finally gave it up after a couple of weeks of milking. It was alot easier collecting urine in those days then my visions of skunk essence production. If you didnt get them sedated enough they would let loose and often I had a chest or face or both areas blasted at close range. I did figure out a more protected way of extraction but they were a challenge for sure. Would have helped for someone to have a video back in those days to show how it was done. I dont think there were such things back then. This was the early 8 track tape generation era. I still have some of my favorites tapes and still play them on ocassion. Atlanta Rythm Section was a good one.

With not knowing how heavy or how much fat reserves are in the skunks using the cloroform is really hard. "AND HOUSTON WE HAVE A PROBLEM" come around very fast. I only had to fondle them, for their fleas and ticks, not their juice. The second go rounds was where I got the best data on the fleas etc. Oh yes! they do get trap happy, especially when they get a free "high" and dinner to boot. But in the wild most skunk's never make it back for a second round at the bar,,, for some strange reason.
