tc35,
That location looks like the place I shot my first mule deer in WY. three years ago right on the powder river in Kaycee.

ooh, ooh, I`m getting aroused. If there are rabbits down in the willows along the creek, the cats will be there for sure. So, to answer your question, it`s not the or what.

"ooh, ooh, I`m getting aroused"
Your spending waaaaay to much time on the road Bob. lol Some pictures will surely do that to a man, but they don't look quite like the one trappincoyotes35 posted!

seeing a cat run off is like, "look at that cat track!, and he is stilll standing in it!". I don`t remember ever failing to catch a cat where I actually saw one. Either it is camping right there or comes back regular, and of course they aren`t to brainy even tho you might have to play with him awhile.

Bob,
There is a cat den within a 1/2 mile of my house...reason I know is on 3 occassions now, I have come around the dirt road in a sharp bend and seen two young cats in the road and zip into the cutover at the same spot, last time I got real close to the second one going in the bushes, looked to be about 10 pounds now, bout the size of a gray fox or a little smaller...Momma is probably there evertime but she probably gets in the woods quicker than her two kittens....I might be able to catch them on a field that is 100 yards from them, problem is the cutover is leased by a group of guys and one of them does a little trapping so no chance of me getting on top of them, but maybe they will still be around in January and I can catch them easing along the edge of that field on the woodline....

winston, 3 words- culvert under road. Set in front, a common dirthole and ther cat goes back into the culvert and hides while the cars go by.

True. But dont forget to add a bit of chain,I run 8 links and that is not sufficient for cats to hide them selves. Also dont neglect sliders.

TC35, yeppers, looks like you have arrived ... Here in WV, (especially in North Central part of the state) there are many many abandoned strip mines. One of the most common features of these areas are "highwalls" that are carbon copies of the escarpment in your pic. During Jan. and Feb. I scout these areas for sign, and generally sooner than later I hit sign and set 'er up. From there, it is only a matter of time. "Ridge"

Bob,
There is no culvert here, small strip of woods running along dirt road and then cutover pines behind that, many 100 acres....I think they are denned right on the edge or just in the cutover in this particular curve in the road where I see them, if I could get on top of them it would be no problem to catch all or most of them, cats are not hard to catch around here if on sign, reckon that is true anywhere, they seem pretty stupid...

I own a lynx as a pet and they are awsome pets...if you get them from a good breeder they will be nice loveing creatures...it comes by name, sits, lays down, rolls over, and even uses the toilet....so they are not stupid at all, they are smarter than a dog on average and very easy to train...but the way I train him is his downfall....food...if he is hungry he will do anything for it...even put his paw in a #2 offset duke. :

Still like Johnny Thorpes description of cats..." The are a shiftless, lazy, weed smoking sort, with no where to go, and all day to get there."
