For the second time this year my trapping partner Gunner cut the crap out of his front foot between the toe and heel pad this morning. I think he cut it on a sharp piece of ice. Has anyone ever used those leather dog feet protectors and if so do they work?
Gunner is a 80 lb male black lab and he hunts hard and works hard for me. He is a great help in finding active rat huts and pushups and he helps me pull the otter sled. Hate to see him limping with a hurt paw - paw.

A dog can over heat with boots and they sometimes walk really funny with them on!
I've used the leather and my dog over heated. I've used the musher booties. They are o.k. but they throw them off a lot. You can make a pair by taking old socks, or kid socks, and duct taping them to the dog. If you want to stiffen the bottom part use duct tape on it. But it will be slippery for the dog.
As for the cut: you can put on some foot guard. or tuff foot It's a liquid that hardens the pad. Some mushers swear by tar from a Norwegian tree. It's made for horses and to paint cut limbs on trees. It stinks and is very messy. You must disinfect the foot prior to application. But it heals and protects. I've never used it.

Thanks. Gunner is family pet too so he is indoors. Think that tuff foot stuff will make a mess in the house? Where do you buy it?
