My dad and grandpa have raised them for years,I love hunting rabbits, grandpa started raiseing them in the 40's,we hunt a slower dog that really keeps track of the rabbit, nothing like the sound on a snowy day.I've grown up hunting over these dogs. Now I've got two young boys,(3 and 5) were taking the 5 year old kevin out this year, much to his mothers dismay,I told her it will be fine and good for him.kspanky

raised beagles for hunting and field trials for 40 years- but am out of breeding and trialing- still have one and will always have one or two- been over 50 years since i've not had a beagle around.
ironically, the one i have now- would have been my ticket to fame 30 years ago- hes as good a point to point tracker with NO spinning or wasted motion at checks- he 100% shows you each track
nothing better for boys than beagles

boy kspanky you bring me back in time- yes, he is indeed what we call a close dog.
I trialed for years- and have never seen one as st forward-
you gut them by the squeeze, shake and snap method?
I like that as well- but found you cannot do it on snowshoes or jacks- their belly skin is just too thick.

kspanky: sounds like a real good time. Beagles can be lots of work but they sure make your blood race when they bawl. I never have even seen a cotton tail. But I certainly shot my share of snow shoes.

I enjoy all hunting- but sitting up on a stand with a pack of beagles pushing a hare or bunny to you- has to be one of my favorites.
one minute nothing is there, the next he's by you...................

Sometimes you'd have 2 or three hares hopping by on the same trail. I loved the pinch points that funneled them.
Other times the dog would run by bawling and you'd know that you hadn't seen the bunny go by.
If I could scan I'd show a few pix. We sometimes hauled sleds to pull the bunnies out!

I do miss the days on the farm, when I could go out to the pens and pick a bunch to make up that days pack-
and I really, REALLY miss the trials-

Got 3 myself and there isn't anything to take your mind off problems like listen to them run.I don't breed or trial either, just run em and hunt em.I don't get big into numbers of kills like some, just enough to eat a couple during the week and freeze a few for when the season closes.Generally I go out and shoot the first couple then set on the tailgate and listen to them run.Little devils will kill themselves running if you'd let um lol

growing up, we did a lot of night running- build a fire, and just sit and listen to them
