I live in Down-east Maine,on the cost 30 min from Canada. I have tried calling coyotes off and on for 15 years with not much luck. I have been trapping coyotes with fair success for the last 6 years. Now I would like to hone my calling skills. Most people in this area think we are overrun with coyotes. But being a trapper I know that we really have low numbers compared to other areas. This summer I bought a few tools of the trade for calling I built a AR-15 Rock river with a match trigger,I cameoed my 835 and I bought a WT caller. I have a bait pile 150 yds behind my home.Last Monday I had coyotes behind my house at 5:30am calling to my lab. At first light I went down a logging road 300 yds east of my bait pile and set up my caller and called in a coyote within 3 min of being set up. I then changed sounds to a coyote in distress and called/shot a second coyote in. Wow that was easy. Well I have sense had the coyotes in the same location but I have not been able to get them to come to the call. I have also gone out at night from 9pm-1 am locating coyotes in different areas then go back at daylight to call but no success yet. Its very thick in this area but I do try to go to areas that offer some visibility. I try to call with the wind in my face and I approach the calling areas as quietly as possible. I have called about 15-18 times in the last 2 weeks and called in 2 at the one stand mentioned. Any ideas on how to improve my calling/hunting? In thick cover like we have here how many stands should I realistically be calling before seeing a coyote? While trapping its not uncommon to have coyotes tend a area 1-3 times a week but some areas seem to have yotes around 4+ days a week. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
