What I meant was the fish oil/lure mix freezes. But its so cold here even coal shale freezes . I'd thaw it on the defroster, I bet that truck still smells of lure.

I can lay a squirt botlte next to the door, and by the time I get to first stop, its usable.

wroght bros if your coal shale is freezing your going to deep in the pile. I take the nice dry/crusty type from the top and also keep it in garbage cans with lids durring the summer any mositure in it gets baked out pretty good. I get minor crusting but nothing that a coyote paw don;t break thru, unless we get mositure on top of the coal shale at the set, then other things like wax and glycol spray will help.
I received a 4 oz bottle and will mix with some fish oil and glycol. How much hard core to each pint of fish oil? 2 oz per pint of fish oil sound good? Going to add 3 oz of glycol to a pint of fish oil.

quite honestly, save your glycol. if you are in temps cold enough to freeze the fish oil, hardcore isn;t going to do the job anyway.
I mix 4 ozs of lure, to a gal of fish oil for most use. 5 ozs in bitter winter. But thats ProCoon-

First time I mixed I read about it here. Then I bought pro coon that was mixed with something, and was formulated for mixing with fish oil. I followed those directions. After that I used just straight lure into the oil and just guessed. It all gelled up but like I said thaw it some, it works, I like bait with it, but at that low of temp fish bait is froze too, hence the combo. Coon bait is free here, used cooking oil too.
I could not get the coal shale to work. Tried experiments, tried a whole line, asked on the net, just not working for me. Either I'm not collecting it right, our moisture in the ground is a whole lot more than those that like it, the coal is not same here, or as pointed out I'm just a dush bag.
Two "Western" guys schooled me a little by PM after that last thread and I will keep an open mind toward the shale, but am sticking to my other freeze resistant methods for now.
At a local demo on freeze resistant trapping this past weekend I asked if anyone liked the shale, not a peep. There were "experts" in that crowd too.
Wroght lol.

I've only used coal shale one year- Wiley gave me a bunch to try out west.
I liked it, never bedded a trap in anything as dense as shale.
brought home some to try later season, and found that it does have a crusting effect, thus saving the bedding under the crust, but after a cold rain then dropping temps- it was hard enough that a coyote couldn't fire the traps.
but if I had a supply here, i'd use it.

wright bros not trying to bash you, just I have been down that road going to far into the pile and such. It gets very cold here like -10 + and I have used shale with good results, it won't take mositure by itself in those temps though like many other things. It is a good product and I find it step above dry dirt and waxed very good or glycol sprayed as well. It is very easy to work with except on windy days! You look like you just come out of the mine by days end.
I have found when really cold and dry to use sandwich baggies under the trap and has a pan cover as it helps fight off some of the frost that builds from beneath the trap itself. I have trapped cats/yotes in very cold weather with shale and the results have been good, minus it getting wet from ma nature.
I use it because easy to obtain I go by the shale pile every week. Wiley has some gray shale he found in his area and mixes it with coal and makes a great covering I have yet to find the same gray he has found, but packs even better than just coal by itself.
