After watching Locklear and some of his groups videos I see they make very large dirt holes for their sets. Necessary?

Randy Smith makes a pretty good size hole and caught about as many coyotes as I heard of, at least in two weeks. I would assume the bigger hole would help with eye appeal when the winds going the wrong way. But I know what happens when I assume.

Bob, I figured that'd be your answer. Slim also uses some pretty large holes.
BigWhiskey, I'm pretty sure Randy is in the Predator Control group. Don't know if you knew that.
I also noticed that they use virtually no backing. Must be the larger holes help in guiding. What I do know is they don't do things as most trappers do.

I tried them and liked how they looked. Caught a few yotes with bigger holes, but found out they are non target magnets for me in my area.Beav is right location, location, location.

Freepop experiment a little. Big holes have not been a regular part of my k9 sets. I have used them. I had to find out if they were worth the effort. I eventually made a trowel suited to the size holes that work for me. I am not going to down play anyones success. Figure out what works for best for your style and likes.

Well If you use MB750s with over sized pans welded on you have to use LARGE dirt holes to match the Iron Any way that's Clint's mind set so I'm told.

Not gonna down play anyone, but the certainly are not necessary.
Lots of coyotes caught with no hole.
personally, I would rather make a second set. Same amount of time, one set.

Mick you are very correct. There are a zillion different ways to catch coyotes. Once me I got the general concept and principle of what catches them right, the rest was refining my method. Again for me it boils down to time and effort spent accomplishing a task.

sat in on clint's demo at the pta roundy, if I remember right, he stated due to the rains that he will eventually be dealing with, he pretty much utilized flat sets as they held up better in the rain. used two traps per set on drags hoping for doubles this way.
randy smith used a 4 inch stihl gas hole auger used to plant trees for his holes, put them into banks and made troughs around the set to divert water he knew would be coming.
i was a purpose to everything they said, probably wouldn't use it because i'm already set in my ways, but it's an idea in the back of my mind if i ever need it.

big holes, small holes, multiple holes, no holes- they all work.
FYI, for me, Badger remakes, are one of those "guaranteed" remakes for coyotes- can't get a much bigger hole than that.
Are they needed? no- but a large pattern IS in my opinion with smaller holes

The ONE thing I see with large holew sets is many guys miss the point of being sure the trap cover the set.I mean you need to be sure the animal is guided over the trap. I see a lot here with guys seeing only part of the idea that never cover the HOLE and let animals approch from anywhere and getr missed. I am Not saying you need big holes just any one needs to have the approach so that they get caught. Some guys look a ta forrest of trees and see only trees. Not oaks, Maples Pines etc...

Good point, stickbowhntr. I would think that with bigger holes, that guiding would be needed. Like you said, they could come from anywhere and miss the trap. But how much guiding do you need to get them over your traps? What type?
