Predator Bait, To Taint or Not to Taint

I am in the process of making some predator bait out of some beaver and woodchuck. I was wondering what your feelings are on the degree of taint or none at all. I will be adding one of the commercial bait solutions to this meat once completed. Any advice or experience is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Horse would be my first choice, cat would come next. Muskrats make a great predator bait.
But I have caught a lot of coyotes fox and cats on a chunk of tainted beaver meat.

So what are you saying is best, muskrat or bobcat, I saw in your video Bob that you feed muskrat a lot. I would like to use what costs the least, and beaver and chuck are what I have, so I hope the bait solution does a good job. How much taint would be good, slight or relatively strong? Thanks

Bobcat and beaver are one and two in my book for meat baits. Taint increases odor push and interest. Finding a good taint for your basic needs is the key to a good bait. A good solution makes good on many types of meats.

If your going to taint it’s only takes a short time in this hot weather….if you don’t watch it close it will bad real quick

Used Bob Js bait last season. It impressed me and I give it a thumbs up.
I fool around with home made stuff too. Like said it probably costs more in the end.

Bob W, does fish work for feeding the K9s? Its available in bulk sometimes, I'm sure you have tried it. With your milage of K9s I'm sure you have tried all like CD said.

We love reading that stuff since many of us know no one that fed that many.

I have used groundhog here and even cat but little acceptence. I have tried several cat bacsed baits but none work for me as good as kasper Horsemeat base Nelsons.

Lion meat with RK's solution and a light taint has worked EXTREMELY well for me. Noticeable vs. bobcat and horse on my line. If you can get it, try it.

Lion is very good eating, and that said it is also a top preditor bait As Bob said a good bait keeps the animal at trap site untill caught.

I like deer the best either rotted to paste or fresh.

I got a deer from a guy one fall that the butcher had rendered inedible.

I'd chop a pkg. in half and just bury it in the paper behind a trap, caught 103 in 3 weeks. That was in country I'd never seen before or I'd have had more.

There were plenty of coyotes but they sure liked that deer meat. Another of my best years was a jug of rotted down deer scraps that I stopped when the top got brown and the rest pink. I had thrown in some real anchovies I got from somebody and added some salt. Don't know if the salt did anything but it sure caught the coyotes.

Oh yeah the way I remember it, I was trapping where deer meat was legal. Long time ago.

theres guys who catch a bunch of yotes who say to leave the meat over a year until liquid, some say to taint lightly, others want no taint, yet all of these individuals catch a bunch, does the taint matter or is there a right answer?

Anything that stinks will catch a coyote. Some better than others but anything that stinks.

Not that it means a thing, but I was out stirring my bait up on our deck, making sure it gets mixed every couple of days. Well my wife calls me to the door a couple hours later wanting to know what in the world our dog is doing. Our beagle was out circling and pawing the deck where the bait jar was. Not as much much about how good the bait is but how good there nose is, there wasn't any drippings or anything where the bait jar was.

BigWhiskey, I have a friend that processes deer. So come season (youth starts towards the end of Sept.), I can get all the trimmings we need.
