I was bending j hooks today. It was drawer cleaning time and I was using j hooks from different dealers/orders. Some are way harder to bend then others.
Do you think that it makes an important difference in a critter unbending them? How about their breaking if you unbend them to rebend them?

I'll re-use a J hook on coon traps but NEVER re-use them on coyote traps. Mountain lions and black bears easily open weaker J-hooks (and some that aren't weak) so I just don't recycle them, not worth the risk or the danger of a mtn lion coming loose at the wrong moment.

The harder the J Hook the more brittle it is. A few 1000's difference in diameter also makes a lot of difference.
I check the hooks for small cracks on the inside of the bend before reusing. If the Hook closes much easier I also cut them out.

for 1 cent or less apiece, why ever reuse them?

We reuse them when out of new ones. They are not available local everywere. A guy should buy em by the thousand. A hundred bag can go quick. Yes I "had" one those benders, until I lent it out like a nice guy.
Newer nails are getting worse quality by the day it seems. Old hardware stores still have the old common nails, for now. All are not equal.

Use sterlings and never have to replace them again!!!!! Weld them shut and they go no where.
Also I replace any and all of the bridgers at the new stage they are cheap and once you open them, never try and close them as they will crack. I use sterlings or MB crunch proofs only.

Yes sterlings are great, except for the welderless.

Needing a J-hook for a coyote snare, I tried bending a Sullivan S-hook 90 degrees, and it broke. Maybe not many would break, but I wouldn't trust a bent one now.

I was starting to say Steve, if you can get them for a penny apeice I'll take a couple hundred thousand. I will reuse on the drag end but not on staked traps..

LOL- me too-
I don't weld mine, but be easy enough to do- never had one opened by a coyote or anything, so see no need for it..... yet, I guess.

I loved the j hooks on the old style Victors, the head was the same size as the hole, what a bunch of garbage.
