for a lab to point. i have a 3 month old lab and she some times points the cat, a classic point with foot up and tail stiff and straight in the air. i always though of labs as just retrievers AL though i ad mit this our first one so i really don't know?

labs have always had the pointing instinct even while being a flushing type hunter. My dad had labs that had the trait- not all the time, but here and there throughout the season they would feel that instinct and point-
25 or so years ago, some lab enthusiasts that liked that trait, started breeding for it, and a strain of pointing bred labs became available. they even have Fd trials for them now. Its not as locked in a trait a a true pointer, but good pointing labs will point the majority of their birds.
non pointing bred labs, still do it occasionally, some more than others-

I have a springer that will point her ball all day. She's so funny. Would love to have her pointing birds for me but she doesnt and/or I dont know how to train her to do that. Plus she is a retrieving fool.

google "American pointing lab association". I've got one from the Kellog lines. Still won't have the classic staunch point of a true pointing breed, but very utilitarian. Good pheasant dog, won't tear up the landscape like a true searching pointer will though.

My chocolate lab will point every game bird it smells or sees. Didnt buy a pointing lab, but I am impressed.
