Say I dug my old Johnny Stewart Cassette caller and tried to charge it after a couple of years of sitting in the barn. No dice.
Do they just go dead after a while? I'm guessing someobody esle has had a similar experience?

I sent to JS and I have to take it off and send in and get a new one for 50 or 60 bucks.
I'm not sure it's worth it. I think I'd rather buy a fox pro with the money.

Joel, you could just toss the cassette tape unit and replace it with an MP3 player or a CD player. They use their own batteries, usually AA's, and they last a long time.
I use the Rio 600 MP3 players and I get them off Ebay for under $20 shipped.
Sounds are easy enough to download or create or just copy your cassettes to MP3 or CD.

So you must have some sort of speaker system? I don't do enough calling to justify spending a bunch of dough. Funny, at the time this unit was the new technology. Remote control and all. Now it's pretty much junk.
My rangefinder is the same thing. Only works out to about 400 yards.
I looked at handheld calls and they're 20 bucks now.

If a guy was ambitious enough, I would bet that he could get that battery replaced for nothing or just shipping.

I'm findin out that you have to charge these batteries every couple of months or they go dead anyway.
If I decide to get into calling I might buy another one and just plan on spending 40 bucks every year or so.
The thing is a lot heavier than the new ones.

Harsh reality, batteries go dead. With even minimum care the battery in a 512 should last years, seems to me? If HS charges 40, 50 or 60 bucks, I bet you can get one somewhere else for a lot cheaper than that? Wild guess, $15.

I have a Johnny Stewart call, 512?, stop at Radioshack, tell them you need a new battery. Last one I got was a camcorder battery, didn't exactly fit, tell them to make it quiet, with foam, etc. Might need to change the charger tip?, they'll do that, get it going. It's almost like a tractor battery, only fire the darn thing up 4-5 times/season, that'll kill a battery fast.
If you're calling from your vehicle, have them make a cord, plug it in to the cig. plug. Check the batteries before you buy, I'll bet you can find a camcorder battery with more amps than anything on the market. I had mine rigged to a motorcycle/4-wheeler battery, back when I crow called, kind of heavy, but it'll last all day. It's 12v.

find the number on the battery, and google it- cell phone batteries, any batteries, can be found, same ones, far cheaper on internet. I'm sure JS isn't using a special battery made only for them- its got some other application I'd bet
