Like MZ says the longer handle and heavier head generates more energy and impact and a bit less stress on the chips to the eyes. When chipping hard frozen ground all day I use goggles. I have damaged more then my share of glasses in my day by working frozen ground.
I have used a maul and a hand chisel at times until I get to the frost free soil under the crust.

Is there a tool out there that is half the weight of a splitting maul. I could see some real double-duty value in a tool like that for early season work......dig the bend and drive stakes with it.
