Yesterday I cut a track of a lone wolf that was tracking 2 young deer. Today I went back and 2 more members of the pack had gone by. They marked a half dozen spots within 5 km. here's one of the kickbacks. Notice the turd? Another pic so show the stride. Not huge but nice. If they come through again I have a half dozen blind sets waiting. Those deer are toast.

I found lots of places to make sets. However, there are only 2-3 wolves. It isn't worth the gas money to be running footholds just for them. There is also the snow factor. We're expecting a foot within the next couple of days. Remember that those wolves might not swing back for a LONG time.
So I blind set snares on the individual hunting trails they made. I have 3 snares that are long shots. I have three others that are sure fire. They WILL catch one of those wolves IF i leave them there long enough. The season ends at the beginning of March. Let's hope that they come back before then.

wolves nearby....big wolves......... little musher........ Don't worry Tman! We trappers are the Woodsman not the old granny or the little girl wearing a red hood! I do go on high alert when I have a live one. Especially in the dark. The story Stef is referring to is a time when i had three live ones caught. I dispatched them. I was on dog team and the going was slow. I had two uncaught wolves follow the dogs and I to the truck. My chesapeake leader (now dead of old age) was fearless. Some of the other dogs weren't too brave. When the team would stop (one wolf on the sled, one on the runners and another being dragged) my leader got us going again. The dogs were always checking out the brush. Nervous they were! The next day I went back to check the tracks. Three wolves had followed us. I only knew of two. The had actually encircled us at the truck. And yes, when they are talking to each other it is quite a rush. Another time i had one about a km. in the bush. I was on foot. It called the pack. Long walk back to the truck with a big wolf to tote. I think I made it in record time!
