Our local association had its annual meeting this week. It was time to see some of the boys and exchange a little info. Everyone agreed that this has been a rough winter, with lots of cold and snow which closed up trail, and that the gov't wasn't taking the bear situation seriously. Unanimous opinion was also had regarding biologists and the lynx population. Further north guys saw that the mooses' bellies are dragging in the snow.
The trapper on the registered line north of me caught a female coyote. That's an unusual occurence. He said it was young and small. He had wolves on his line this year so any other coyotes might have become lunch meat.
I heard about a new set. Buddy shovels off snow on a lake and makes a mound. He then stabs his chainsaw into the ice so the water fills into the hole. A beaver carcass is thrown into the hole so it freezes half in the water. It is then covered with snow so the birds cannot see it. Buddy then fences it off (somehow?) and installs 4 snares. (He didn't say so but there has to be a snowmobile/snowshoe trail somewhere.)
The snow mound is the visual. He says wolves and fox aways check out snow mounds - and I think he is right.
I might try it one day, except I'd be setting steel on the mound and dabbing a bit of XLDC!
It seems that our revamped do-it-at-home/internet trapping course is quite successful. People are taking it and comments are positive.
Gossip giving opinions on the above gossip are welcome.
