Had a few interesting things happen today. The first is a weird catch. front and hind foot. It was on a slider. Also caught this. Not what i was expecting. It was at the wolf spot. Lost another ? at the same spot. It dragged a log that was PART of the beaver dam a couple of hundred feet. Then it chewed the wire. It was 3/32 7x7 with a BAD and Stinger. That was good for a couple of "FUGS!" Here's the location. The one that got away was caught at the middle of the dam. the female that I kept (48 pounds) was at an end. Scenery shot!

need 1/8th. 50% is par for loss with less than 1/8th you may be able to re-snare him if he isn`t dead or layed up. but I imagine he is. bad deal all around. I`ve extolled the virtues1/8th vs 3/32 in he past. no more fugs, go 1/8th

I always was 1/8. I decided to get fancy with the Stingers. So much for that.

I`ve had live bobcats on 10 foot 1/16th with stingers. just doesn`t always work like suppose to. was a huge tom and scared to death he would break the bad as he was zinging 20 fet one end to other, hard body slamming and was a 30 plus lb cat. couldn`t get him dead fast enough. I just got rid of everything but the 1/8th and now sleep like a babe.

2 things musher to make with Stinger snares.... Always anchored snares to the most solid point (tree, disposable stake etc...) And use 10+ft cable and swivel. Were you using Cam lock? Oh well... Too bad for for the lost, what can you do Set couple traps today... Tomorrow more. Lot of bears around, corn droppings all over the place, huge damaged to corn fields... 2 farmers stopped me.. They all want the bears gone... Maybe a couple but you know... I don't want a lost too many time with them. I'm going now building a couple 1/8th snares for them, I want a kill them by neck. BTW... Nice pics. Stef

Stef: I had the filed cam, the swivel and the extension. The log was part of the dam - in the mud!

sometimes a guy does eveything perfect and just doesn`t work. my `live big cat was on a cam lock too, and he had a heck of aring, so not like I just ran him into it. atuff happens, the main thing is we do everything we can, run regular, use good equiptment ,and still there is always some small % luck everything works like it supose to. I do feel by using 1/8th the odds of never an escape go in my favor a bit better. I`d rather miss an animal than takle a risk chew out or run off with abracelet. just something that still bugs a guy even years later about losing an animal due to equiptment failure.

it`s not the lost animal so much as it`s the fact it may come back to haunt us if found by the wrong person, and of course concern for the poor sob running arouns wearing equiptment. my guess is that coyote is dead or will be soon, so at least he isn`t suffering. back in my 3/32 days I re snared a few and foot trapped some others that had chewed thru 3/32. it wasn`t pretty. cured me of 3/32 forever, no matter what anyone says or how many million they have caught. each to his own, but using than 3/32 its not a matter of if, it`s when and how many. anyone that has snared extensive can`t deny it.

I've never set a snare for a wolf, but I'll trouble shoot the one that got away. If it was another yote, I'll guess it was hip-snared. Not sure how heavy the log was?, but to drag it a couple hundred feet, don't seem likely with a neck catch.
That is some pretty country too.

every chew out but one that I later recaptured was a neck snare, good clean one. they just urn head sideways and start chewing. I even had a dink red fox chew out of a 3/32 once. 24 he daylight ck and gone. re snmared it a week later 1.6 miles away and it didn`t even struggle, just started chewing and was down to one tiny strand. was some fast smacking going on. wasn`t till after I killed it I found the remains of the first snare around it`s neck. I swore it was stolen originally as just couldn`t fathom a red fox chewing 3/32 in two. a big eastern coyote, I`d say 50% loss without immediate entanglement, and kill locks, and even then 1/2. nowsome far west guy will post cable was bad, never heppened to him yadda yadda. not the same critter. try holding an eastern coyote up by one hand, full grown one I mean.

The snare was set before the log in the pic with my truck in it. It was also a bigger limb! It was hanging over the dam so the wolves were going under it to cross the dam. When I found the log there was no tangle. The wire WAS NOT wrapped in any way. There was no bitten off brush. The critter got tired of hauling and chewed. Where it was located it would have tangled in a hurry. It had gone down the road to a dead end.
The loop was pretty standard. I 'm wondering if it was a wolf or coyote. I can't see a wolf running with a yote. But one could have got caught before the other (24 hour check).
Anyways. Stuff happens.

Big snare loop set for wolf may have caught the coyote down on the neck almost to shoulders. That would give him lots of pulling power.
The 3/32 7x7 cable catches the fur so it would not slip up behind his ears. Could be that adding all the hardware to the snare makes it grip tighter so less likely to slip higher on his neck.

WW: That all makes sense. 7x7 does snag and so does the filed cam.
Thanks for all the considerations.
Also thanks for the editing. I like a circus as much as the next guy. I just like to choose if I want to see a circus or not!
