Given that ID & MT have seasons on wolves currently (pending further decision by the court) it won't be long till the shooting/hunting rags start having 'The Perfect Wolf Rifle' articles if they don't already. Seems like a high probability of long shots at moving targets. I'm thinking a 25-06 with a fairly stiff 26" barrel. Or an AR variant like Remington's R-25 in 260 Rem.

just built a 6.5x284 1-10 twist to shoot 100/120 grn Mainly for long range coyotes. So far 100grn ballistic tip at 3600fps 6 dead between 550 and 865 yards exit holes all under snuff can size all 6 DRT. No twitch no wiggle and acceptable pelt damage. Two doe mullies this week, One 424yards 120BT at 3150fps two steps done, no exit. other at 503, 10 stumbleing steps no exit. Would love to try it on a northern howler.

wolves die easy from what I have been told from those that pursue them, much easier than a coyote in most cases. I would use a .243 90-100 grain bullet or the 25-06 with a 110 grain because my gun likes them so well.
I'm with you on the .260 with a 120 grain offering. You can acheive long range with this caliber and not have the barrel burning effects of the 6.5-284. Waiting for remington to offer their varmint barrel guns in this caliber and then I will shop around and get one. That or a custom built 6 dasher with a 105 berger VLD! The remington will be cheaper and shoot well I'm sure.

Wolves die easy?
I don't think so. I've seen wolves take several head shots from a .22.
When you think about wolves, think coyote on steroids.

WEll I can only tell you what I have been told that pursue them and one reputable man says when he shoots them from a plane they die much quicker than coyotes. This is froma guy that has shot alot of coyotes and his share of wolves from a plane doing depredation.
Head shots understand larger head and maybe not hitting the right area of the brain, body shots I'm told no contest between the wolf and coyote. The coyote is more of a survivor than the wolf.

I know nothing about shooting things from planes.
I have seen coyote die by being stepped on (2 cigarettes in time waiting), bopped on the skull, choked down and shot. Not many but enough to get the idea.
I've only seen wolves shot. I usually take a lung shot. Sometimes it's very quick. Other times the bullet has a tough time.
I'm always talking about .22's for coyote and wolf.
I think that they are both tougher than hell.
