I knew this but have forgotten it. It seems that logwood crystals are not really a wood. What is it?

It's made from a tree that grows in Central America. The dye has been used for centuries for different purposes. I think even the Mayans and Aztecs used it.

WW: I might be way off base here but is it possible that the reddish log wood is some kind of coal product?

The black crystal dye is coal based...the red powder is from a tree in South America.
