I've been scouting a new 80 acre piece of land for the last few weeks. It's a sand/rock pit and dumping area that's on private property. They seem to be coming through every 2-3days. My question is that I'm only seeing tracks and no scat at all, not even old scat. I'm guessing this is a core area and not close to territorial boundaries. What say you?

northwind- can't argue with setting tracks- set em'-
but-
I think your assumption is wrong as far as it being a core area- I'd say just the opposite, that it was travel route and they use is regular.
WileyE told me to keep this in mind, if you find multiple scats in an area, that means that those coyotes are confident in that area. That would point to a core area to me.

I'll definitely be setting the area when the season opens but I was curious as to the frequent tracks but no scat. Thanks for the info Steve, that's what I was looking for!!

Some years coyotes scat in the road and some years they don't. Quit worrying about all of the coyotology and just catch them.

Some feedlots here are covered with coyotes and no coyote crap can be found.
I never relied on crap to decide if i set it or not. But I've only caught a couple coyotes in my life and never run for senate or made a fox trapping video in PA.

scats can be hard to find, or not there at all like you mentioned, just pointing out what multiple scats mean...........

No offense but Multriple scats don't man squat, that is just one mans interpretation.
Ever catch a coyote in a trap and have the road full of scat the next day?
What about creating a bait pile just off the road and coming back the next day to find lots of scat in the road?
All scat means is you have coyotes...quit out thinking your self and just catch them.

robert depends on time of year what that coyote scat means and it's location. Scat does have meaning if you know how to read it. I don't think anyone can have too much knowledge when it comes to pursuing coyotes.
Actually in this area and the coyotes we have due to pressure most of your bait stations won't get much activity for 3-6 days after making them, and you far better off making those stations further from a road. They work them with more confidance and better locations than next to a road to draw multiple coyotes to it.
In this area with less than normal amount of roads they often use them as territory boundry's we don't have the 1x1 mile section roads of the midwest. Knowing these boundry's can help with calling, locating and finding some of those coyotes.
Or as you say robert, could just mean crap is crap LOL.

just as your opinion 'robert is nothing but an opinion as well-
why not try giving advice, rather than naysaying what everyone else says?
and that applies to others as well

Steve, Not "naysaying", just pointing out that a majority of trappers simply make catching coyotes a WHOLE LOT HARDER than it is. Yo want to know what coyote scat means in an area? It means there was a coyote there that took a dump....scat is the result!

1 scat means that, multiple means other things- if you disagree, then you do- but disagreeing, doesn't make it so.

Not at all- I say if he disagrees, then he does-
opinions are just that-
mine is that is where there is muttlple scats, of various age classes, then its a point where coyotes tend to stay, at least for a bit-
you disagree?
