I've been doing a little trapline preparation lately. Slashing trail in the heat isn't much fun!
What I'm most keen in looking for is wolf tracks but with the dry roads and torrential down pours I haven't found any. I realize that this dry/rain stuff doesn't seem to make sense but when the ground is dry the rain doesn't soak in. It just runs on top and wipes out sign.
A buddy saw tracks in an area I know well while he was checking his moose. A couple of older ladies that have a camp saw a wolf from their camp window yesterday at noon. It came down the road, looked at them through the window, and kept on going down the road. There's lots of moose and several deer in the area so I figure the wolf was doing a lunch check as JlDakota described a few months back. Being the good neighbour that I am I slashed their view of the roiad a few feet wider. If I can't find my own sign I'll take all the help I can get!

Just came back from a permission trip.
So far not much red but coyotes are on many farms I did today.

Hi Musher, Went to scout the other day, tracks all wiped out too but saw some nice wolf tracks in the mud at bottom of skidder tracks where I want to set some Wolf-Masters this fall. The brush has grown so much this year that they're using the wheel-ruts much more than they used to and things are getting interesting for pass snaring and Power Rams.
Talk to you soon.

I can't trap wolves here in Wisc., but we have a few,(some have collars). I see all the time where they chose a sharp or 90deg. corner of a field to mark. They tear he11 out of the area if you pee on the spot, it's kinda funny to see.

Interesting BK. I've only found them marking specific objects. It could be a tree , large or small, or rock (grapefruit to watermelon sized).
They do tear a place up when they kick back, though. It is very impressive to see when there is a couple of inches of snow. "Obvious" is an understatement.

LOL musher, I think they can crap at will as the always seem to when you pee on their spot, and yes they do make the grass fly.
