Nothing wrong with the 243 OR the 17. I shot a 243 for many years both for fur and for adc. My go to bullet was the 85 gr. BTHP. If I wanted to save the fur, I used a 60gr. Varmiter from Sierra.
I use my 17 for calling bobcats and fox. If a coyote comes in, he dies too. Fur gets saved. I cant say the same thing for the fox with the 243.
Today, I have gone to the 221 Fireball. GREAT fur caliber for fox at 15 yards and coyotes at 200, and all points in between. But it is not a long range caliber. A guy just has to know the limits of his weapon and stay in them. In the areas I hunt, you get few shots over 200 yards on coyotes. I do have areas however where a 400 yards shot is common, so I take the 243. Other areas, you NEED a shotgun as a 50 yards shot would be considered long.

Jb have you tried a 60 grain partition? In my rem they shoot as well as a 52 Hornady A max with less splash.
I agree with both of you, and many people who are stuck on small calibers for coyotes if they could see just how little my setup does on coyote fur I think many would be surprised. I have little worries on fur , I want stone dead, no runner coyotes and the .243 with a bullet designed for them does the job nicely. I killed a pair yesterday big dog and big female white and fluffy 70 yrds and they both had a .243 hole in and out. They where day feeding on some rare breed chickens on a ranch.

TC39, I have a buddy that claimed similar results from his .25-06. .25 in and .25 out. I wish I could remember the bullet specs he was using. Makes sense to me as I have had to do plenty of sewing from my .250 so I doubt a bigger rifle could be much worse. Thought about trying the .25-06 as a good all around deer/antelope/coyote type rifle that my wife could shoot as well. I live in the windy part of the world as well.

I must be getting a little better at detecting the turn of a phrase, attitude, philosophical orientation, etc.
Nice to have you join us, Mr border bandit. Also, nice to have you, (finally) show up at the annual HM campout, although we were starting to get worried...and, btw, I wasn't kidding, you snore. I believe you are stiring the pot? Thank you, we need it here, sometimes.
Steve Craig, a no show? What happened?
17's are suited for a relatively narrow range of applications, unless you are fairly experienced and suitably proficient. The problem is; most folks that use it can't seem to grasp the concept. Personal opinion, just like everybody else. You know; Ford sucks, stuff like that?
Good hunting. LB

I must have missed it, Geordie? I miss a lot of conversation due to this constant ringing in my ears. Maybe you will find out, one day? Great seeing all you guys at the campout, glad you made it back home uneventfully....wish I could say the same but at least it was a tire and a battery, while poor old AR Shaw got that tickie, coming out. Bummer on losing the rifles, btw.
Speaking of AR, I'd like to hunt that TX ranch w/him and Quinton next week. A damned fine pair to draw to!

Leonard, I got a call from a client on Wednesday evening, and she wanted to meet with me on Friday afternoon late. She has been a GREAT paint customer in the past, and this time I ended up with a $35,000.00 job by staying home and meeting. Just couldnt turn this one down, and hated to miss the show there in south AZ. Also ended up meeting with her best friend the next day too and hope to get that job as well. In these times, and economy, I just couldnt turn it down. Sorry I missed you guys. Steve

Completely understandable, Steve. Some priorities trump other priorities.
On the other hand, I'm about to declare Tom's postponed hunt a forfeit and might volunteer to take up the slack.
I can dream, can't I? lol

Yeah, his lovely wife ratted him out. Seems the rough exterior hides a heart of gold and compassion for his fellow man on his journey north. The Carlson Hospitality Ranch, Inc. is soon to be part of the network linking poor people that are just looking for jobs Americans won't do. It's 24/7 & Se habla espanol, too! Tell everybody.
Just ribbing ya, Vic! Steve is right, he's quite a gentleman.
