The rats are pretty much confined to the beaver dams further down the creek, there are one or two in every slow stretch. Couple of years ago the beavers had built up pretty good and I took 138 rats in 5 nights. Next year big flood washed them out, they are building back again. The kids live about 10 miles down the road, we get together a couple of times a week. Alec had a big time because we camped out in my cat camp, ate canned chili, potato chips, and drank pepsi. I taught him how to play Gin Rummy, so we played till late, his mom had sent his video watcher machine and play station but we ignored them and stuck to traditional camp card games and conversation. I think those electronic deals are shite to kids if they have the better option of someone that will sit down and interact with them. Like and old fat grampy. We caught some fish to!! Joel

It was pretty cold out, but we were warmed up from the warm water, snowed a bit this morning.
No mink in this creek. We had a big time last night shooting at rats with my .22 pistol, they were swimming around all over the place. I could have hit some but then I'd have had to swim out and get em so I pulled the shots. Shooting rats by the moonlight with the grandson, priceless.
Are these the grandkids out in Wyoming? You go out and see them don't you? I couldn't imagine going 7 years without seeing GK's.

Steven, come on out and bring some walleyes, I usually tell guys it's about impossible to take someone because of the ATV situation but I'm finding that I'm hanging around the truck more and more. Like to listen to the radio to much I think.
The deal with the upper photo is an artesian well out on the edge of the playa (Smoke Creek Desert) warm water, not hot, just like a warm/hot bath. Feels good on the old joints. Clear as a bell nice blue color until you get in and stir up the sand on the bottom.
The Burning man Hippies have found it now, so you see evidence of their debauchery there occasionally.
Bill I've probably ate more cans of chili now than I've drank cans of beer.

That pic with your grandson and no shirts on, you should have snapped a shot with each of ya holding a rat, would have been a shoe in for the photo contest! With a grandpa like you to mentor him, that young man should grow up just fine in todays mixed up world.
We've been beaver trapping a pretty big line out of boat for a week. We actually take time at lunch to build a fire, roast a couple weenies and heat up a can of beans. Makes for a better day and good memoirys. I felt much better sitting in sun roasting a weenie and enjoying the day with my partner, even though the beaver market tanked yesterday. Felt good to just be there, even if going broke doing it.
I got a big enough john boat now to snag paddlefish out of Joel, you should bring that grandson out one of these years and we'll get a pic of you and him with a 70 lber.

yep, can`t wait for mine to get 1 or 2 more years on him to go to ks. with gramps. took him to wyoming last summer but he was just too young. caught himself a horny toad etc, but doubt he`ll remember anyhing as was only 2 and 1/2 then. I`m pretty sketchy anything in my life before 7-8 years old. in 20 years he may not remember anything. and in 20 years we might not either! but in the meantime, it`s all good. dust to dust is actually kind of a comforting thought. the way it ought to be. all we have is here and now, right now. so I`m living it up every chance I get.

Take a kid outdoors, throw in a little water, add a grandpa, and you've got the recipe for a great day and some lasting memories. Spending the night only makes it better.
Is there anybody who hasn't thrown rocks into a creek to make a crossing, usually slipping in as you add that last rock. Did you skip stones? Even today I still have to skip the occasional stone, brings back good memories of times I spent as a kid with my Dad.
Enjoy.

That is special Joel. My grand kids dont have much interest in trapping except one of my grand sons. But it isnt a burning desire yet. He has other interests that seem to take more of his time. Not sure if the one will ever grow to have the interest I had at this age. Pass as much on as you can as us old timers are growing short on time here and alot of our experience and knowledge will go with us.

He's got the lingo down, he knows where the Indian Reservation starts and ends.
He says the Indians have better rocks than we do until we get to the South end then he says we've got better rocks than the Indians.
He always makes sure that I know we're off the Res. because we had a cat run across the road once and I told him we couldn't shoot it there.
Funny these kids have no concept of Indians, cowboys, cave men anything in history.
