anybody ever see coon boards made from poplar underlay? sold some coon to a local buyer for the first time this year and he showed me his boards made this way seemed like a good idea mine were always made from 3/4 pine his are cheaper to make and being thinner helps with a little length he told me most of em were 20 years old so they must last pretty good

I've seen some underlayment boards and they looked ok. Matt your buyer was right 3/4" is way to thick. find a sawmill and have'em cut you some popular, cottonwood or basswood in 5/8" thickness then finish from there.....B.....

All of my coon boards are either poplar or basswood that started out as 1" rough cut. I planed them down to about 5/8th or so. Poplar is ok, but I think it's a little harder to get a pin in dried poplar than basswood. I have a few pine also that I made from scrap lumber.
