Hello everyone, i'm kicking around the idea of getting another fur gun...i've pretty much narrowed it down to 3 choices.
A .223 in an AR15..
A bolt action 17REM...
OR
A bolt action in a .204....
Anyone one want to chime in any suggestions of what you would get? I'm mostly interested in what your thoughts are on the .17rem and the .204.
Thanks everyone.

Get a bolt...THEN you make the 1st shot count..with a semi auto one has a tendancy to shoot TOO quick since you know you've got another BUNCHA bullets right behind it. lynx

Wait a little while till Remington releases the .17 Remington Fireball, which is their version of the 17 Mach IV wildcat. Very efficient cartridge.
And you can get a barrel for an AR-15 in .17 Rem.

Ya, I know lynx....but damn those "black guns" are pretty cool...LOL
I received a Ruger M77 in 22Hornet in a trade a few weeks ago, I was wanting to trade it in on one of the 3 guns that I mentioned. I already have a Ruger M77 in 223 that I use as my pickup gun....but the thought of having either a 17REM, or a .204 in kinda intriguing to me.
FWS...I don't keep up on the new rifles/loadings coming out, but that .17 Rem fireball sounds like its going to be a pretty hot little number, i'll keep it in mind.
Thanks for your thoughts.

FWS, any ballistic info available yet on the 17 Fireball. Often thought of getting a 20 Tac, I know JL sure likes his.

Shot 15 lb female bobcat last night with my .17 mach IV. No. 52 this season. First thirty or so with a Calhoon .19 Badger. A few hundred the last ten years with .17 rem and .17 mach IV. Have to say that the Badger has out performed them both. Velocity of about 3500 fps and the calhoon 32g bullet seems to be built just right for fur. He has two 32 g bullets-I use the heavier jacketed one. I would guess the 17 fireball [same as the machIV] is a limited edition and will have a long waiting list with ammo expensive and availability a problem at first. If I had to choose just one it would be the .17 rem. Download for cats, ammo and a variety of rifles available. The .204 doesn't kill coyotes any more dead and is more than you need for cat hunting.

You guy's would be advised to listen to the last post.
The author is a friend of mine and a guy that I consider to be one of the finest night hunters for cats in the West, if not the world.
Sorry we couldn't get together this winter.

Thanks for ruining the rest of my season as I can't get my big head out the front door. Was just supporting my opinion on the question of a fur gun. Easy to be a hero with the population and feed we've had over here the last few years. But thanks anyways.

Calhoon is the only one, he created it. The american walnut is $953.00 and has a pac-nor super match barrel and single set trigger. A new factory remington will cost $700 or so and has a factory barrel wich may or may not shoot well. Suggest try and find a used .17 rem and then clean the bore really well.

That forum has tons of info on the 17;but a word of warning,it is not kid friendly.
I have posted there a few times only to find out how inadequate my 243 and 22-250 are for yotes(LMAO);very subjective info, very cliquey, very vulgar.
