Your bedding the trap in dirt, not laying it on cement.

Not necessarily if your trapping cats. I set more traps on hard ground than in the ground.
I kind of wonder sometimes if I didn't make a mistake by center swiveling at all.

Yep.....Robert I started the thread because I have never used a "Stearling" type swivel....I waited a bit before I started the modification from my stock bridger's...to hear what other trapper's had to say about the swivel....AND...I will be changing all my traps out....But I wanted to hear bad things about the use of the swivel....and didn't really hear anything...as it takes me days and days to make one change....I think that Joel hit's it real close for me...It's all about bedding quickly and moving on...adios

Your bedding the trap in dirt, not laying it on cement. Maybe we have some concrete trappers.

I use both Nail hook swivels and crunch proof, but I add my own J hooks to the crunch proofs and they have a little longer "throat" this cuts down on grass binding up between the colosed part of the j hook and the swivel body. In my opinion when you thicken the swivel body you need to lengthen the "throat" on the j hook to provide trash clearance. I trap in some alfalfa buffer strips and it will clog the crunch proofs with the shorter j hooks....B....

Brian maybe you need a BMP study on your longer throated J-hooks to see if they really make a differance or not
