I've tried to pound two earth anchors, after hitting rocks and getting the dang thing stuck, and having to pack the dang thing back up out of a steep wash to get a drag I just put the whole thing away and have never picked it up again.
I never stake a cat trap and don't try for canines so I don't even carry a hammer anymore.
As far as cushion springs, don't need them on drags as they have a built in cushion when pulling on a bush.
My favorite is a double slip knot cable tied off to something near the set, light and easy to install and take off when moving. Next is an iron drag, then a rock with the right shape to tie off to. Rocks are time consumers so I only use when it's all I have.

Just bought some JC conner shock springs this year ,2 reason I bought some only an 8 inch chain allowed in NC unless trap has an approved shock spring after 19years of the same lingo in our state laws the state finally approved one the JC Connor's , so i can finally have a longer chain set up on my yote traps also had my first yote pull out in front of me last year MB650 go figure offset was a toe catch had him for hours by the way he had a catch circle just went crazy when I drove up .I think with a shock spring he would of not got that last good tug ... also this is my set up for staking... cross stake re-bar man hear

Hey Snakebit ,the double staking system on the left usually comes with one J Hook ,you will need just one more J hook and your good to go .the system on the right 1 J Hook attached to 3 links of chain cheepest way i found too do it ,I find chain like that at gargage sales Ect CHEEP a little more expensive from the hardware store ,just mash to 2 on the outside to open them up a bit to get your stake trew

I understand Bob but I'm under the gun and need to do something fast for this next job I'm moving from heavy clay to this deep sandy loam. if I have to I will use a rig like on the right hooked into the chain on the trap and depend on the one swivel at the base (just for 2 or 3 weeks) , unless I can find some J hooks local.

I just realized I have 100 of those berkshire pieces coming in tomorrow I'll just use some of the J hooks off the extras, I'll only be setting about 4 dozon traps on this job.

They won't fail on you in your first season so don't fret It just use them. Those small SC dogs won't test your gear all that much. I know I've trapped em for over 10 years. But you do need to cross stake. That ground will give up single stakes In a heart beat. I just use a piece of cable form two loops In It and slide a chain link over It and hook up your J hook. Just slide your stakes through the cable loops and your good to go. Where you located In SC?

You will be ok with what you have for the time being. You have that much coyote work. Not many problems with coyotes up here. Ya I trap north of you Marion, Marlboro and Dillon and then east a bit. Normally I have a NC permit since I'm 5 miles from the border.

hey Beav or others , when I was using only one stake I liked to put it under the front jaw for solid bedding even tho the traps I'm using do not have a loose jaw now with cross syaking where do you guys like to stake in relation to the trap set ? And as far as the amount of coyote work down here it's picking up now that some have seen that you can pull alot of critters off there property in a short period of time. Most are owners of recreational land for hunting and want all the nest rodders and coyotes gone. on the last job it was funny I filled alot of the local non voting demacrats freezers and it was like I was driving an ice cream truck around all wanting to know if I caught any coons they could have.

Im not putting traps in and out as much as the Bobs do, but I've used a lot of berkshires for 20 years and they still work fine and never had one crack.
BUT- since I went to disposibles, its a moot point- ubt I still use them on upper end beaver drowners in soft mud, sand and on shallow water coon sets.

I also quit using the double stake bershire. They break. About half of my rigs I made a double loop with 1/8 7x7 cable. They have worked very good. The same principle as Bob's Joe Chestnut double stake ring. The other half now have the same as Bob's.

I used to use links from some old trace chain I had in the barn. When they ran out I started looking for something else to use. That is when I found out J.C. Conners & several others sell double stake rings just like the trace chain I used to cut & reweld.
