I am interested in knowing what other wolf trappers use for a wolf trap, what they like, dont like and why? What is the best trap on the market right now ? What is legal in your area?

I've caught them in jakes, sterlings, CDR's and even soft catches. They all work but some traps, like the soft catches take a beating.
They are all legal here if they are laminated, padded or offset.
If I had to buy just one the CDR would get the nod. However, it's a big trap when there are people around. The jakes and soft catches are excellent P.R.. People look at the padded jaws and all is cool.
In mulitispecie trapping, when you might get a lynx or fox in your wolf set the jakes and soft catches get the nod.

I've caught them in MB-650's, but the USDA uses MB-750...Both are good.

Not to start anything, but some guys wolves are just glorified coyotes, very small. Not like the 100 lb Timber Wolves. This would be very relavent to the question.

The problem with wolf traps is that there are very few people that have caught enough wolves in foot traps to have carefully evaluated the effectiveness or, pros and cons of each trap. So far there has only been minimal research done on wolf traps in terms of meeting the International trap standards. The research that has been colected was done here in BC according to the Fur Institute of Canada.
Of the 25 wolves that I caught last year, 12 were trapped, 1 shot and 12 were snared. I used a Tom Skuratow wolf trap and it worked well. this trap was designed in BC but is no longer being produced as Tom has retired. I have some new Sterling mj 800's and some Minnesota 750 wolf traps that I will test this year. I find it interesting that the USDA is using the MD 750,

The softcatch #3 was tested quite a bit here. Stef has the details, but I believe that the number was 25 wolves that were evaluated.
It was this testing that encouraged me to purchase some. That and the law!
Gibb had a good run with Belisle's.
But you are right. No wolf trap will be tested with hundred of captures.

WI Is doing wolf BMPs now and I think MN Is also involved. We necropsied 25 In March I wasn't privy to what type of traps were being used. But I do know that MN Is using different traps then what WI Is using. Back when when WI first started their wolf studies they used 114 New houses and found that did the best job with the least amount Of Injuries. The wolves we necropsied looked to have little or no foot damage, so whatever traps were being used seem to do the job.

I would really find that info interesting, which trap did they study and did it pass the trap standards test? Also the information on the #3 soft catch. I have held several wolves in my beefed up and modified #3s, the wolves chewed up the trap and every time the trap was not resetable but it did hold the wolf. Inzana

How long before the BMPs end the snaring of wolves in Canada?
Is Wisconsin going to try and test "Cable Restraints" on Wolves?

Wisc has already used cable restraints on wolves for putting collars on certain pack animals... they work!
