I often muse about this, as I've had fox run off that were bedded down next to one in a trap. I've also had coon sitting in trees next to one that was caught.
Every time my gang sets are full I can't help wonder if I made enough sets.

Most of the time I do, have set as many as 10 coyote traps in 100 yards, and had as high as 6 the first check, but many times Im kicking myself had 2 triples this year and didnt have a open trap left, so who knows there might have been 4. 5, or 6 there that night that I missed.

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. For coyotes it seems I never set enough I always think I am wasting traps if I set more than 4.

BK, I'm guilty too. And it's always places that I was just plan lazy and said , well I'll put another set in tomorrow. I think I've learned my lesson now. Robert

does gang setting 4-6 traps at X number of locations give you more than 2 traps at 2-3X the locations?

I am talking about on those coyote freeways where every coyote in the country will travel thru. Or on a big bait station.
If am setting core territory yeah I will set several locations with 2 or 3 traps depending on the sign in the area.

Nope, sometime I dont.
last year I was setting for rats opening day.
There was something like six of them swimming around in one pond when I made the sets. I set two traps.
Like duh!!!

I have a stack of hundreds of 6 pacs, like 6 caught ,several hundred different times, 1200 animals. got to where I wouldn`t take pictures of 5 or 4 or 3 or 2. you betcha 6 traps in the right place catches more than 2 in three places. and with fuel and operating expenses rising it is starting to make a big difference in the bottom line. of course the sign needs to be there, the time of year has to be right, and the trapper has to have the smarts to know the places to set 6 and the places to just drive on by. scatter gunning any location with a turd or track is the amatuer way. and it works but it will break the bank in miles and time invested for piddly catches as a %

I drive on by all of central indiana now, not because of lack of coyotes, but because the fur is so cheap here( poor quality) that I can`t justify it as a MONEY MAKING venture. plus , our dnr deserves the coyotes more than the trappers do. the chickens definitly need to come home to roost.

I was telling Robert W. just that this year while I was trapping Cats. I was kicking myself for not having more traps per location-set, because I had at least 10 visits buy cats that I didnt catch at those locations. And that is only the ones that I could see the tracks! No telling how many more was missed. From now on for cats when possible, 2 traps per set!

You will catch more cats putting in more sets plus....How many traps do you think you can haul?

guess I'd rather trap my ground, than drive by it 18000 miles to trap.........
setting 6 traps at a location here, would be an exercise in....... futility.
and so would be moving after 3 days.
but hey, Im just a local ameture trapper, what would I possibly know about this area?

In my area every year I have hot locations that Ill take from 11 to 18 coyotes at so I would be remiss if I set 2 traps at these locations and try to be out of there in 5 to 8 days. I would be driving back to those spots for 2 weeks trying tto catch the same amount of coyotes.

my best location by far this year, over a 6 week period, gave me 9 coyotes. 1 double in that bunch, 4 traps set on the location.(and 6-7 fox, many coon)

6 weeks? are you nuts?

Post by trappnman on Mar 5, 2008 9:30:29 GMT -6
are you?
actually, it was 5 this year, thanksgiving was a week earlier this past year.
For most of that time, the location was hunted hard for deer.
the reasons I get and keep land, is I trap it. 3-4 days won't cut it with most farmers here. When a location is at a swing point, and I drive by it no matter what loop, I keep traps there.
