before it froze i found a pond with a lot of muskrat sign.it is grew up in cattails i went back and didnt see no where they were going in and out of the ice did they leave ? i no noone else has caught them its grew up so thick its hard to get through . thanks. fish.

they could have a good food supply under the ice. they could be feeding on the roots of the vegitation. mike

dont they have to come out for air? if they are staying under the ice how do i locate them? thanks. fish.

Yes- they do need to have air- and this happens 2 ways- huts and feeder huts (pushups) and/or bank dens.
If you have no muskrat houses in the pond, or no pushups (a kinda minihouse that encloses a feeding area- often temporary)- then if the muskrats survived they need underbank dens.
Go to the highest banks- and see what you can see. Try cutting some holes in the ice and probing the bottom for runs (use a pole). If you find some- set them up- but more likely not.
Then try baited conibears- a slice of cob corn, a apple slice, a potato slice- something visible.
If no luck- check back after ice out and see what you can see. Remember runs and dens for next year.....trappnman
If no high banks- the rats likely moved before freeze up or died under the ice.
