Does anyone have a "hide gripper" set-up that is easier on coyote hides than the vice grip style?
Ive seen one that I may try, just looking for other ideas?
Pictures would be great.

Buckfreak made mine for me.........using the modified vice grip style......works great.
I've seen some use a golf ball......
No idea where I learned this, but was told many years ago to twist the hide, like on the legs of a coyote....if you're using a skinner.....helps keep them from tearing. I do this on some coon, all coyotes and badgers.

best is the hinged plate and rod deal, no clamps, just wrap base of tail around 1 1/2 shaft and let plate lock it down, self tightening deal, wont tear fur like visegrip can on coyotes at times, sorry no pics at moment.

I second what rk said. Our clamp does self tighten a little, but i hold onto base of tail while pulling so it doesn't slip. Then back off on motor slightly while not pulling to put a little slack in cable.

Haven't seen the plate-rod deal.
I just peel the skin on the legs, twist, clamp and peel....tail....peel, front legs.......peel...ears, peel eyes/bottom lip/nose.......done.
I love my skinner!

On my machine now.... All I use is noose made of ΒΌ" inch nylon rope (yellow rope) for holding the hind legs on my machine and also around the fur when I push on the pull switch and it works great .

I might have but forgot if I did. furbuyer up road has one like I described, and I built one for another machine too, but havent ever had time to do my own, and havent been skinning pickup loads of fur myself either. I still got clamps myself. but this pipe and plate deal beats any rope, visgrip clamp, tennis ball or any thing esle Ive ever heard of by a huge margin, in both speed and tearing hides on occasion. Flip open gate/plate, wrap base of tail around pipe, drop plate shut-and nothing else, no clamps to adjust, no ropes chinched up to untie or bread, simple as simple can get.

RK a gentlemen I used to work for had one that sounds similar to what you described, made with a hydraulic power system, man would they pop and snap just like rice krispies when you put a coyote on it but boy did it skin.

I'm going to try the duckbill vise grips with 3/8th rerod welded on, two on one side and one on the other to fit in between. Stef, I don't quite understand your method, could you show a picture or explain?

I edited my post above...LoL Sorry... I simply use a nylon rope on both sides.... I mean one for the hing legs and the other on the other side around the butt/back legs "fur area" for pulling. No golf ball needed. I pull the hide from the carcass, I don't pull the carcass out of the hide. Stef

I have been useing the vise grips with the 3 rod interior for gripping and works well for me until I see another system the I can incorporate that is better. I would like to see the one RK is talking about.

Have been using the vise grips for years and never torn a yote, a coon or 2 yes, but never because of the grips always at some other spot on the hide.
