Boxers, briefs, silky banana hammock, go commando ? Hey, every other question has been asked and discussions have raged on and on for page after page. ;D I was actually looking for a good discussion on long underwear/thermals, etc.

Several years ago our daughter bought me a top and a bottom of REI 100% polyester long underwear. It is light, very thin wicks very well and keeps you warm. It is the form fitting style. I like it.
I don't know if you were looking for practical advice or more debatable and or humorous stuff. I don't have any of those to offer at the time so I chose the above message.

Layering the bottoms...Silk, Fleece then Neoprene. Or replace neoprene with light water proof, windproof bibs while on land.
This is for the Minnesota Winter, might be a little much for California.

Underarmor, or as my wife calls it my silk undies.
If you look closely at the guy modeling the stuff in Cabela's that would be me.

I always wear a base of Underarmor when in the field or working. I wear the compression shorts under anything else and Underarmor tops. As it gets cooler or I',m in waders I add Underarmor long-johns. A person can take a lot of cold when they stay dry at the skin but when it gets seriously cold, I add a layer of thermal PolyPros top & bottom over the Underarmor.
Having no hips or ass, wearing slippery Underarmor underwear has made me use suspenders to keep my pants from sliding down. Truth being told, I found that I really like wearing suspenders! ;D ;D

Joel, you and Randy are a pair of identical twins ;D Both are great guys! You like to trap and hunt, he likes to fish and build knives.
Zagman, that's hillarious!
Marbleyez is on the money........layering to your activity, start with silk, I prefer the real silk rather than the synthetic version.....then go with Polar Fleece......comes in 3-4 different weights......layer.....outter layer is fleece with Windstopper or Windshear......as long as it's not raining or snowing....
If you want to stay comfortable you MUST stay dry......silk and fleece will do that for you. If you want to stay WARM you too must stay dry......you have to move the moisture away from your body....these fabrics will do it.
Get rid of your COTTON......tshirts, socks........and you'll stay far more comfortable.
Windstopper, if you've never tried it, you're missing out......you can wear LESS clothes to keep you warm......when you stop the wind....
I have a couple UA polos, they sure work like magic.......haven't tried them as a base layer.

I wear thermal long johns for water trapping (saves leg cramps later form cold water) and just pants, and/or bibs for predator.

Reminds me of the trapper that had a splitting headache for 20 years. Doctor said his testicles were pushing on the base of his spine and the pressure was going up to his head and causing the headache. Could fix it but would have to remove his testicles. After much deliberation he decided to have it done. After the operation he felt so good he decided to get new trapping duds. Asked the sales man for boots. the sales man said size 10 D. The trapper was amazed that he guessed the right size. When he asked how the sales man said 50 years experience. Well he was so impressed he decided to get new everything. The sales man continued to know the right size. When he got down to underarmour the sales man said size 36. The trapper said I got ya. I'vebeen wearing size 34 underwear all my life. The sales man informed him ooo no. Size 34 is too small. They would push your testicles up against the base of your spine and cause one hell of a headache.
