I'm making all my pogo's. Started to crimp Ferrule's with vise. This works , but seems slow.
I went to a Tool Store tonight. The crimper they had ,looked like a large set of bolt cutters and cost 75$. This can do 4 sizes
Checked a trapping catolog from out west: bench mount type crimper, over 300$
For the money so far, vise is getting faster.
Advice, please.

or just smack them with a hammer on a rr rail.

Pogos I'd just as soon wack the ferrule with a hammer. Like bob said a small piece of RR track or equivalent to an anvil. I finally broke down last spring and got a bench swager from RK I really like it making snares but feel better on the double ferrules just whacking them still with a hammer.

or get $25 bolt cutter, grind a couple notches in it for crimping doubles and singles, clamp one jaw in vise and you have a one handed bench crimper of sorts, there are some bench crimpers around for 225 or so, and they are nice if doing volume crimping.

Thanks, I drove by Lowes tonight. I'll check them out tomorrow. Going to a Amish Flea market saturday. Yoders Clare MI. Takes up 40 acers, just for the venders. I got a hammer and steel.
Bob, Beyonce and Shakira are going to do a duet. You were the first person I thought of after reading this news.
Thanks
K.I.S.S. ,that's what I want to do, 2 lbs hammer

I bought one off ebay for about 50.00 works great, found could buy one at FLeet Farm for about half that. Always thought about doing that with the bolt cutters RK never did though. Use mine for drowners snares, and super stakes already done around 500 items no compaints already made my money back.

Standard swagers are slow as hell for me hammer is way faster . never used a bench swager but see how it could be faster yet .I'll just stick with my hammer and anvil works for making my cable stakes and my rebar stakes

I made a little frame out of angle iron . set a 1 1/2 ton bottle jack in it and smash away . easier on your elbows than a hammer and quicker than a vise.

I bought one of the Lowes $25 crimpers and it looks and seemed to work great with 3/32 double ferrules. I set up a system like RK was describing so I could do it one handed. Squished a good number of ferrules and stopped for a rest (they looks so pretty when they're done this way instead of smashing them).
Anyway, thought I'd test a few and see how they held. Long story short, that crimper didn't squish 'em down far enough. I could yank 'em right apart with a good pull or two. Are there minor differences of "guage" in aluminum ferrules where if I bought them from another source they would be slightly larger and therefore crimp down tighter?
Moral of the story is check them to make sure you aren't inadvertantly making a breakaway device!

RKs got a good idea but if you can get to Harbor friegt they have the bolt cutters for about $8.00. No loss grinding them down!

i use the deal from lowes, just tighten it down in a vice and rock and roll, no problems and crimps down tight. i crimp twice per ferrul.

Bench crimper here and it has sped up productivity well worth the extra cost. Used to hammer all of them.

Any advantages to using a swager other than this? (they looks so pretty when they're done this way instead of smashing them).
