I'll trap from day one to whenever they started going bad. Some years thats the end of Jan, some years not ot March.
Prime simply doesn't matter any more on coon. Its all fur quality. Flat coon have little value- but once they start getting that heavy neck and the wooly belly- they are your best average coon. While the top end usually advances- that is the big nice coonm in late Oct will bring a few more $$ late Nov- but your overall average is going to come down both because the smaller coon deteriorate quicker (IMO) and they got all the smaller coon they want.
Even our low end coon here are going to give you a $10 or so green average, so they are always worth pursuing for me.
You'll get your wish on rats- $2-3 averages is going to be the norm.
mink are going to suck. It took them forever to inch back to that $20 range. When a coon brings more than a mink-

Steve, what do you think a "good" average on mink will be this winter? With a mixed bag of bucks and females.
I averaged 17.50 on put up mink, only had 5 though, if that qualifies to make an average, 4 of them were females and 1 male.
Give me your thoughts?

From what my buyer has told me- you are looking at an average of $10- maybe $12 on males, half that for females. I'm thinking under $10 average overall-
thats so low, that one can hope those numbers will increase... but at this time, thats about it.
Thats about what our mink were going for last year- I'm think you got $22 or so on the male, $16 on females. I averged $22 and $17.

Yep waiting for them to prime around here can get you shut out with an early freeze or due to trapping pressure. You gotta hit them hard from day 1. I used to release the little ones but have talked to some 800+ coon guys who have convinced me that you want these small ones out of the gene pool. So until someone argues the other end of the case I'm whacking those lil tom cat sized buggers and getting them out of the way.
