Can coyotes smell metal? Probably not. But even I can smell wet rust.

I know I can still remember the sweet smell of my first girlfriend in highschool, and most every woman I ever got close too. I`m sure coyotes can smell metal, but most would have no reason to take notice of it one way or the other.

I don't believe coyotes fear metal, after all, in most farm country you can't move a metal detector 5 feet without hitting something. But I agree with Sage 100%- for whatever reason, I find that rusting traps spook coyotes.
Not really spook them, because they work the sets- but they will have tracks everywhere, except on the trap bed right over the trap. And its not a bedding issue. Every time I dig up such a trap, its got that fresh rust on it.
I found that giving the beds a good spraying, reduced the problem quite a bit. Rainy weather really made the problem stand out.
I went back and forth on this spraying or not- but without a doubt it helped.
Leggetts say 3 days in humid conditions without a catch on a used trap, and change it out. And thats about right I found. I pretty much routinely change out remake traps if nothing in 3 days. I see the difference in the remakes, so starting slow a few years back with the practice, I now consider it routine.
I know a dry rusted trap has no effect- but that wet rust- sure does.

Coyotes arent as smart as one might think, everyone harvests them with steel of some sort or another. It's just the lure that attracts them is the hard part to figure out. any comments?

Gray fox sure aren't afraid of the odor of steel ;D There are not many coyotes in the habitat or at the elevation I trap grays and cats, and most of my cage sets for gray fox are pretty well buried in the brush. Like this location, there's a gray fox in the cage which was in a wash about 25 feet off the main dirt road. Lot's of locations like this in my areas, and the walk through cage sets brushed over worked very well. This is all on ridgelines, and finding the locations where there's a convergence of ridges coming up makes for cat/fox highways. ;D

Waste the duck. NO Greg what it proves is in a high unexploited population of coyotes you will get a few to go in a cage and thats all that picture says. Go to any military base in CA and the coyotes will litterally eat out of your hand.

Got to be sung...with feeling....
Women have come, women have gone, Everyone tryin to cage me. Some were so sweet, I barely got free, Others, they only enraged me.
Sometimes at night, I see their faces, I feel the traces they left on my soul.
Those are the memories that made me a wealthy soul.

Just reitterating what Coyote Whisperer said...when I was stationed in Fort Irwin CA, it was absolutely amazing how the 'yotes were around people, never saw anything like it. They were just like "puppy dogs". When I was stationed at Fort Drum NY, we had a red fox that would sit and watch us during formation in the morning. Those K9's adapt to there surroundings, whatever they may be. Im pretty sure I could have collected a couple hides in CA when I was there.
