I tip my hat to those never having a dug trap, never seeing a track on the pattern, never missing a coyote.
I don't believe every coyote that comes along come dancing on the set. As wheelie says, some of mine come sneaking. And I've seen it in snow and I've seen it in dirt, where I coyote comes close and doesn't commit. I've used a lot of lure brands over the years- and I still find this to be true. So for those that have such a lure- send me a bottle and I'll use it and if I see the same results- no missed coytes ever- I'll sing its praises from the top of the world.
Most coyotes I feel work a set boldly, not all. Sometimes you get a few tracks at the set, esp in snow- and no more. We don't know a thing about what that coyote was doing inside of the catch circle. How he worked the set.
A depression on a set is just a guide. Bobs analogy of walking across a field isn't pertinent, becasue thats a case of faster movement and being unaware. A canine is seeing a depression, and I do thing it helps guide to the pan. I don't do it however, I prefer using a guide or two outside the trap.
In most cases it doesn't matter if you guide or not, but sometmes it does. And it takes so little time, why not do it?

tman, you are still in the secret lure mode( some what). back up and let the other factors factor in. send me your miss some lures and I bet my results stay relatively consistant with my other stuff I use. betcha. and even if youwatched me make a set, how, where, when, I bet nothing would change for you in %s. why, I dunno why, but I`ve seen it in other guys too. I beleive there is some small% inhereit genetic ability in humans that is variable that affects trapping success. 6th sense for lack of a better term. and yes everyone misses some, but some miss sooooo few as to be statistcally insignificant. most gmen are that way. most hardcore guys with 20-30 years under their belt are that way. did they learn it (environment)?, or did the other trappers just drop out because they weren`t born with it? I don`t know, but I feel it is there ,or not there ,and not a whole lot a guy can do to change it. about everyone can get to the 90th percentile with study and hard work. not everyone can excell from there .

Bob- I have no problem with taking most. I think I do. I certainly know my experiences here and one year west, match or surpass those of good trappers I know. I've put in the time also.
And trust me- I know damn well there is no secret lure- that was my point.
I just have a hard time with the never see a track, never get a refusal posts. I don't get constant tracks and refusals and neither does Lori, but over a season I do get some- and many of those I have no doubt are in next trap or next day.
I'll say that for my coyotes here, I'm on the top of my game. Took me a long time to get there, but I'll not hide under a basket.
