well, what do you think about this set up, float for mink. Not my design, but I modified it to accept a cage trap, 6x6x24 with drop door. This set was made to have a 110 in the center with bait. Works real good, now we will see how it does with a cage instead.

you've done good with a 100 for mink? I used to run a few floats for rats, and never did catch any mink onthem.
But your setup looks good- let us know how it does.

Will you cover the platform with reeds and grass or maybe mud so they aren't walking on the plywood? I'm just curious.

yes, covered the plywood with rolled asphalt roofing first and then built the box on top. The asphalt will hold the mud better and in our rains here in the northwest, the mud will wash away and the asphalt will be more natural feeling in my opinion if the mud goes bye bye. The photo of the float was from a friend and I copied his design with some modifications for cage traps. I will post a picture of it once I get the cages I bought for them in.

I would think a spring fired door would help. It sure helps on squirrels.

drop doors on the cages. Only cage I will ever use is the drop door style. Thats it, no other way. ;D

I'm wondering if you have caught mink in cages before. If that works, I would definitely try it on dry land or close to water. I know that they will go into a baited cubby along the river. I'm not sure if they will go on a float. HP

If a colony trap counts as a cage mink are caught in them all the time.

Fo research, I've known people to catch mink in cage traps set on muskrat huts, covered on top.

England mink trappers use cages all most all the time. Used to be a site about them.

that is a picture that was given to me as reference to build them. I have built the ones I will be using to be single door entry. Basically the cage slides into the opening in front and is secured by a washer and screw at the bottom to hold cage in place.

I will be interested to see how it works. Do you also plan to use cages in locations where one would use a blind set? I would think a cage with double doors placed up under an undercut bank would catch mink scooting along the edge.

I think you can catch every mink that comes by with a minnow trap with the throats opened up or a regular perch trap. Just throw half in and half out of the water with a handful of crawdads or a fish or two.
The only problem with some of you guys is finding open water to use them in.

open water is not a problem here, we dont freeze up except for a short time in the river valleys. Problem is cage only trapping.
