That's more skunks than I've seen in the last 15 years. Caught my first one in NC this year. Of course when you do most of your trapping in the water you don't catch many skunks.

Maybe you ought to send me some of that SKUNK lure with my order , no sense passing that kind of trapping up, besides lots of essence there for the taking.

Lots of scent there for lure making!
A skunk has been coming to my carcass pile this winter. One night was cold 0 to -5 F with wind and it travelled a good quarter mile from it's den to the carcasses. Sure surprised me to see it had been out in that weather.

They were highly prized back in the day.......... or somewhere in there. Dad always talks about men working for a dollar a day if they could find work, while skunks brought 3-4 bucks. One of his best skunk stories was some member of his family overhearing a conversation on a party line phone. A neighbor was calling a family member to tell him about a skunk they'd killed and they left it on a fence post for the family member to pick up later after it had a chance to air out. Guess it was within walking distance, so dad's uncle got the lantern, found the skunk, skinned it and left the carcass on the post.
Didn't they used to call a skunk coat everything but skunk? That's what I remember reading somewhere. Remember a long list of names but only one specifically-- American sable. That's why the blacks brought more. Then I believe a "truth in labelling act" was implemented and the skunk market was damaged a little. What refined lady would want a skunk coat? lol
One other skunk story. Guess it was common to dig skunks out of the den back then. A farmer had dug one out before season and put it in an empty chicken coop to prime up. He later got a possum and decided to put it in with the skunk. The 10 cent possum killed and ate the high dollar skunk. This farmer raised 8 kids on a quarter section, so he took the loss pretty hard.

I sold some large skunks at a local auction in Dec. $10 avg. ! I'll take that anyday with the price of fur what it is . the skunk avg. was higher than overall auction avg. on coon.

Nice job. I only caught two stinkers all season. I was hoping for a few more cause I wanted to get a real nice one with a lot of white, to get it tanned. I'm still hoping....

Historical market for skunks with wide white stripes..FHA sells them, I love them, wife lets me dry them in the spare room in the house....I'd skin/putup everyone (after the juice and fat has been harvested)... I've always wondered why my wifes freinds never stop by and visit? Skunks have many values : )

Personally, I sort of like the skunk pew as a background smell. Unfortunately, my wife's taste runs differently. She ran me out of a church service one day. (I guess there's only so much Aqua Velva can fix.)
