Dave, make me some while your at it and I will give you plenty of dirt to make up for it. ;D
Something I always wish I would have done, come November.
I don't plan on doing any land trapping until after the first of the year and it's usually dry around here by then.
I know Bob said he always buys his trap wax at Wally world, I am guess ing that is Parrafin(sp)?
I plan on waxing my coon traps and then cleaning out my wax pot and trying that this year, though.

Ok.. I've got my wax finally.. & it's in blocks.. Has anyone ever tried melting the wax & pouring it in on the dirt while heating the dirt? Would this work? or do i have to shave or cut up the wax? thanks David

thats exactly how stef does it Dave. There might well be something in archives about it.
spreading out my last bucket of dry dirt just now, and find that once again, didn't have the inclination to make some waxed dirt up.
maybe next year......

I'll be doing my wax dirt in the next couple of days. Just went to TSC and got the torch. Last night the cement mixer was dropped off.
? How many cups of melted wax is a 3/4 of lbs?
I did the solar method last year. I'm thinking I used 12 cups of dry wax to 5 gal pail of dirt.

Offensive July and Aug Heat/sunshine............free
Hobby lobby Wax $11.00/ 10lbs ...........1/2 price sale every 6 weeks
100gal black plastic stock tank at Tractor Supply $40.00
1 sheet of plate glass salvaged from remodeled storm door.
truck load of wash sand from the Redi Mix plant $6.00
traps that fire all the time every time..........priceless
last year I thought it was great that this method didn't need flake wax , this year I didn't even chunk the wax up, just threw it on the dirt in a ten pound slab. Stir and add dry dirt to taste the next day over your lunch our. Put in storage container and start again.
Gives ones life purpose when the spring fish bite wanes.
Should be the first thing taught in trapper ed.

I should say that when I first decided to try WD I made it in my electric roaster. You know, the kind they serve church buffets out of. If your not patient though and keep it on the lowest temp you can kind of smell burnt dirt. Dont know if that is good or bad, but if you pinch one I suppose he now can Identify all your sets.

The ratio I use is 1 pound of wax per 1½ gallon of sand.
I melt the wax first and add it to hot sand in mixer.
Easy as 1-2-3

Would this work? or do i have to shave or cut up the wax? thanks David I've been telling myself for years that I need to try waxed dirt. I finally got around to making some today. I melted a pound of wax at a time, and added the dirt when the wax was completely melted. I stirred it with a wooden spoon until the dirt had a uniform "wet" look to it. Pretty easy.
