What all can be used to clamp on to the fur? I have seen 2 vise grips used, and I have seen the golf ball/string or cable method. What other options are there? What works best?
On the yote skinning thread, I think it was Stef that mentioned you can get a winch for $50. Is this a hand powered "come along" or an electric winch?

I use a golf ball. Mine its electric "12V" costed me 60$ Canadian with an "hand switch" that I can use it as a foot switch at Club price.

With the golf ball method, where do you put the ball? On the back skin next to the tail? If so, it seems this would require a lot more skinning before the machine takes over.

No matter the method of attachment, you have to skin the tail out before you can attach.....
But yes, with the Golf Ball Method (GBM) you put the ball in the back just beyond the skinned out tail.....
If the coyote is hanging head down, the ball is BELOW the tail....
You must be careful here, keeping the ball dead center in the back....if your attachment creeps around towards the weak belly leather, you may POP the hide, ripping a irrepairable "hole" in the hide.....yep, this comment is from experience.
Hooking to the loose legs seems a better proposition in avoiding this.....Rich Kaspar has the newest, latest, and greatest method of doing this and is to lay it on me lickety-split....
Good luck
