I like to run and gun coon In the water I don't Intentionally try to drown them. I just want them away from the set. I either use a T bar stake and a long chained trap or a slide rod with a short chained trap. I leave the T bar stake out of the water a few Inches so the coon will tangle up. When using slide rods I'm either very close to the road or I'm working out of a boat and all the rods have been pre placed along the stream. I really don't care if the water Is 3' deep or 12" deep the coon will still be away from the bank. If It drowns great If not I'm not concerned because It will still be there. I run 2 day checks. It's just about Impossible to make all drowning sets. Lets say you make a drowning set for mink and a coon gets In It, Is that coon going to drown? probably not. Are you going to pass up that mink set because a coon may get In It? Every trap line Is different you need to tune yours to what works for you. Personally I like DRY coon so most of mine are caught In body grips but at times I do get In the water.

not going to argue, but if i could legally run traps every three days, i would try and drown but if i had a few that were still alive, it would not bother me in the least bit, however i would be more careful in areas that would have a greater chance of someone seeing something. i take great lengths to avoid people as much as possible with our daily check law. p.s. - coon here are small and 2 feet of water is way over the head of majority of coon here even back foot caught, average weight is maybe 10 pounds before skinned, soaking wet.

shag- public perception is everything, as you know. I don't worry about it- but as my original point was- to 100% drown coons, you need water. Many of my streams have winter trout season- I want those coon out of sight- or if not out of site under water.
I understand that msot coon wil lbe dead i n18 inches of water- but its not a RELIABLE amount ot drwon coons RELIABILLY which to me means all the time.
It's just about Impossible to make all drowning sets
if I want the priviledge of running a 3 day check, its not only possible but mandatory. And yes, I pass up good locations miles away to not have to run a 24 hour check.
I prefer not ot drwon coon on a 24 hour check alos- and run a samll daily check line . Keeping a coon isn't a worry- I thought we were beyond coon pulling out of traps?

if mandatory here and for me to guarantee all would be dead, i would stake in waist deep water on a slide system. i prefer water i can stake with hip boots which is a little less than that and prefer a slight to moderate current. and i try and stake the slide with the current so the animal will go down quicker in my opinion if not fighting the current.
