my dad used a set all the time that was a rock tunnel made up of rocks about the size of softballs, set maybe 6-8 inches apart and about 3-4 ft long. no bait, no thing but a 1.5 ls.
I've used used it a couple times- I'm thinking I should use it more.
mtman- fish in the shallows go both ways- a fish going upstream in shallow water would be easy meal.

Sure it would Trappnman, Thanks for the tip. I have caught some mink in the shallow riffles by accident in rat sets and kept it working to continously catch more until I moved to another area. I really havent paid as much attention to that as you have. Sometimes the obvious does get by me and Im looking to correct more of that. Thats a good set you and your dad made there. I have heard of it a few times in the past and figured to start making some of those sets in a lot of places and to maybe add to the more coon resistant blind sets for the area that doesnt have a coon season. Your right I didnt take into account that the mink would hunt there as well as travel through. I always liked the 1 1/2 LS for mink. I went ahead and got a lightweight pair of pruners like you told me about and threw em in the pack. That will save on the old green river blade and maybe keep me from getting another cut on my scarred up ol hands. I wonder how a mink will work the shallows like that? Maybe from a prominent vantage point like a rock or something? Maybe they just move around in the shallows looking for something to draw their attention by moving at least part of the time. I have seen droppings on prominent looking rocks in the shallows and figured they were marking their territory while resting there for a moment..
